Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do you think that cutscenes should be pre-rendered?

Pre-rendered, or in-engine cutscenes?

Pre-rendered. 16 20.00%

In-engine. 39 48.75%

Don't care. 25 31.25%

Total:80

Do you think that pre rendered cutscenes help a game, or do you think that in-engine cutscenes are just as good or even better? I personally think that in-engine cutscnes are better, because pre rendered cutscnes are always gonna be the ones used in trailers, and you will be disappointed when you find out the game doesn't look that good.

Another reason I think in-engine cutscenes are better is because they don't really switch any graphics. I remember watching a Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance video where a guy uses the Grey Fox skin to defeat Senator Amrstrong, and the video had two very different costumes. The first was Raiden's regular costume, and the other the Grey Fox skin. This being a Metal Gear game, the cutscene was around half the length of the video. I actually forgot that Raide was supposed to be wearing Grey Fox's armor for a while. This made the video a bit disorienting, because I constantly had to remember Raiden wasn't supposed to be wearing his regular suit

Should be a "don't really care" option in the poll.

pre-rendered was great back in the ps2 era because it made the cut scenes so much more epic that what could be done in-engine. ...but today graphics are pretty great so i now prefer in-engine for continuity especially when the game allows you to customize your characters looks.

also, now that i'm a digital only gamer i like the relatively smaller file size.

I dont mind either but I always love pre-rendered. It makes you feel like you reached a certain special part in the game and feel more accomplished.

a game full of 1080p fully pre rendered 20 min cutscenes is going to be gigantic in terms of file size, sure it was not too bad with 480p video on the PS2 or even 720p last gen but realistically putting huge pre rendered videos in games now just turns them into a bother of filesize considering all the games have to be installed on either X1 or PS4's harddrive to play.

I liked it back when they made cutscenes using live actors.

Prerendered is bad when you can customize your character and games where you can't customize are bad anyways.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Just like pre rendered backgrounds, pre rendered cutscense are a work around for limited technology. I still enjoy them, but there is no reason for them anymore.

you know that most in-engine cutscenes are PRE RENDERED.

there is 3 types of cutscenes
- the one rendered by the console, they use the engine and the power of the system
-The in-engine, pre rendered ones, they use the same engine and assets, they look like the game, but better, and can't be rendered on the system
-The other ones, CGIs, live action (of course) , animation (of course bis) etc, made from the ground up with other means.

Pre-rendered cut-scenes (Bluray quality) with some minor enhancements to the graphics can be very nice. Thinking about FFXIII for an example.
