Forums - Sales Discussion - After beating the Wii U, what's next for PS4 in Japan?

some pussy

I guess the next goal for the fastest selling PlayStation in history would be to try to beat....

The Sega Saturn. It will be a tough fight.

The best-selling home consoles ever in Japan are:

PS2: 22.02M
NES: 19.35M
PS1: 18.85M
SNES: 17.17M
Wii: 12.75M
PS3: 10.44M

Not only does nothing else exceed 10M units in Japan besides those six, no other past console comes close to the PS3. The Saturn comes next in line but sold fewer than 6 million units.

So, the PS4's real task will be to beat the PS3. It's certainly possible, depending on how well sales continue over the next few years and if the generation is long enough and the PS4's legs are strong enough. The next big boosters for sales will be FFXV and the PS4 Pro, so we'll see if those help keep the PS4 comparing favorably with the PS3. I had a LTD sales comparison chart somewhere, but I need to update my data. That'll have to wait a bit as I'm about to eat a late dinner.

What about PC Engine? I don´t remember if it sold more or less than the Saturn that´s why I´m asking :P

So the ps4 just passed the Wii U at around 3.2m units sold.  What consoles are next in line?

1) Vita

2) PS3

3) Wii

And then later on we will see if the NX can beat the PS4.

I don't mean just current Gen comsoles.  I mean from all time.  so it would include gamecube,  Saturn,  vita,  PS3, Wii etc.

What's next? Try to achieve PS3 sales in a shrinking market.

If the price is right, NX could trounce Playstation in Japan and take much of its support. Essentially what 3DS did with Sony's mobile support.

I looked it up and found this.
Genesis: 3.58m
Gamecube: 4.04m
Vita: 5.2m
N64: 5.5M
Saturn: 5.8m
PS3: 10.5m
Wii 12.7m

So after just beating the Wii U, in the next few months it will beat the Genesis and the Gamecube. Then next year it will beat the N64 and Saturn by the end of the year or soon after. Next up is likely to be the vita which will be over 6m.

After that it's uncertain times. The ps3 is next which right now it's on track to match. Will be interesting to see if it catches it.
