this was all not consumer friendly?

The problem is 360 was delivering similar and arguably superior gaming experiences at a lower price.

Bluray was arguably a mistake given Sony doesn't care about UHD this gen and most games were fine running off a DVD. The Cell was basically unnecessary and Sony should have used a cheaper CPU. PS3 needed the HDD to play many games while 360 could play many of those same games from a disc.

The other features are not why PS3 was so expensive. Bottom line, PS3 could have sold better and been cheaper simply using a traditional CPU and DVD like 360.

Sony had invested in the blu ray format and had a format war to win against HD-DVD. Implementing it into the PS3 internally helped Blu-Ray win the format war.

But when you consider they lost billions to win a war of the shrinking physical media market... was it worth it?

Now UHD is irrelevant to them while Playstation is their crown jewel. They also hurt the Playstation brand to get Bluray off the ground.

Those things are nice but... $600 when there were alternatives out there for cheaper.
