Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 Passes WiiU In Japan

Considering how weak nintendo support for wiiu, i dont understand why ppl call this an amazing achievement.

I dont see why some people see like same great achievement beacuse on all other markets PS4 passed Wii U in less than 1 year while in Japan needed 2.5 years, and Wii U is dead for quite time now and soon will be discounted.

But Japan was supposed to be WiiU's strongest region, and the PS4 was supposed to be dead there?

That's one way to look at it. Another is that the ps4 got great western games that didn't apeal much to the Japanese (e.g. Uncharted 4) and it's only now that it's getting big Japanese centric games (e.g. Persona 5). Wiiu, on the other hand, had plenty of huge games from the start (Mario, smash, kart, etc), includimg a game that has sold more than any ps3 pr ps4 game and has crazy legs (Splatoon). ps4 has just started brining out the big guns, so yeah, it's pretty danr impressive it's sold so well with these releases.

To be fair, PS4 was selling great in West even without must having PS4 games or great exclusives (U4 was released only 4 months ago). Nothing really is impressive about PS4 sales in Japan, actually compared to WW sales they are very disappointing, PS4 WW sale numbers are currently  round 45m and from that number only around 3m was sold in Japan, that is bad not impressive.

Speaking about Wii U sales, Wii U is dead for quiet time now and soon will be discounted becuse NX is coming in near future.

Well this took a long time.

I think his point is that Japanese PS4 sales may improve when more of the big games start to arrive in the next 12 months.

Final Fantasy XV - November 29, 2016
Yakuza 6 - December 8, 2016
Resident Evil 7 - January 26, 2017

Dragon Quest XI - 2017
Gran Turismo Sport - 2017
Hot Shots Golf - 2017

So far none of the top 10 best selling franchises on PlayStation in Japan has seen a mainline iteration on PS4.

He called Japan PS4 sales impressive, there is nothing impressive about them at all regardless games, PS4 sales on West were great even without great and exclusive games. Only around Japan 3m from around WW 45m is bad, not impresive.

It's impressive that it's matching ps3 sales launch alligned.  2016 is tracking very well and it will end up coming close to ps3's best ever year of 1.8m.

Next year and onwards will be good too.  The Wii U may be dead for a while but not for the last 15 months which is the headstart it had.  It also had an extra holiday.  Sales of ps4 are impressive and they will continue to be.

No. Ps4 sales haven't been impressive in Japan. I agree with you on that. Though I think that is and will be a general thing for every home console (that isn't also a handheld) in Japan from now on.

It's really telling that PS4 is the 2nd fastest selling home console ever worldwide and yet the "failed" Vita still has a 2 mill lead over it in Japan.

Still, PS4 sales may improve a bit as the bigger games finally start releasing.
