N64 Emulator Removed From Xbox One

That didn't take long

[UPDATE] A Microsoft representative told GameSpot that the Win64e10 app "violated policy," which is why it was removed.

"We love to see passion for gaming, and enjoy supporting all types of game and application innovation. While Win64e10 was initially available in the Xbox Store, further review showed it violated policy and is no longer available," a spokesperson said. "The full Windows Store Policy can be found here."

The original story is below.

News about a Nintendo 64 app for Xbox One emerged this week on Reddit. It apparently let you play games from the classic system, including Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64.

Now, as you might have imagined, the app has been removed, though people who have it installed can reportedly continue to use it.

As reported by Eurogamer, the app is called Win64e10. It was actually released over the weekend, according to people on Reddit, though buzz didn't really build until days later. According to the site, the app, which cost the equivalent of £7.69, was "hidden on the marketplace as it had not received a Microsoft-approved release." If you knew the app's name, however, you could apparently find it.

Microsoft has now stepped in to pull down the app. People on Reddit report that it still works for those who have it installed, though it has some issues that future patches could have addressed. You can see a YouTube video of how the app works here.

An Xbox One update that came out this year for Xbox One introduced support for the Universal Windows Platform, which basically made it possible for Windows Store apps to run on Xbox One as well. As this example shows, Microsoft is likely to take action against apps of questionable nature, like this one.

GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details. We will update this post with anything we hear back.

Darn! Oh well, no way it was sticking around forever.

MS doesn't want to deal with the hassle this would create with Nintendo, whether the app was technically legal or not. I don't blame them, to be honest.

Nintendo no doubt stepped in to pull this down, probably not worth to fight for this emulator to remain in the store

Emulators are a very dangerous thing to allow on any digital store, I don't blame them for taking it down. Although I'm wondering when is someone going to try and make an emulator for non-Nintendo consoles. Has anyone tried to make a Genesis or a PS1 emulator for the XBOne?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well. It certainly would be hard to put N64 cartridges on X1

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

lol they were even charging money for it? Nintendo could certainly go after whomever added that app to the marketplace.

Otherwise, Microsoft definitely had to pull that not only to avoid trouble with Nintendo, but also so they wouldn't look like hypocrites if anyone tries something similar with their properties one day... granted, there's no word on anyone working on an Xbox emulator, but I suppose it could happen eventually :p

I didn't think this was gonna work. I was surprised it even made it to be honest
