Well just think about this way. The only way for the NX to be more successful than the Wii U is to gain some users back from the PS4/Xbox share. How would you do that if you can't even be on the same level as them let alone surpass them? Why would people who were not interested in the Wii U buy the NX?

I would have to disagree and say that Nintendo's users didn't move to PS4 or Xbox One. At least their console gamers didn't move. From Wii to Wii U, I don't think it was a movement but a loss of consumers, casual consumers that is. And that is itself a bigger market than PS and Xbox have. Nintendo got a taste of that market with Wii and they've been trying to gain them back because if they do, it's a surefire success. But the problem is, that market has moved to mobile devices.

So I guess in a way you're right, if NX fails to court that Blue Ocean market that Nintendo wants, the only way to increase NX's marketshare would be to gain back PS and XB users but they're already so set in that brand. It's a really strange situation.

I moved lol. So did many on here. NIntendo just doesn't have the 3rd party support it needs to bea number 1 choice.

I don't think people realize PS4 is the real console for everyone, not only core gamers. It has all kinds of games with beautiful graphics and it is cheap with many features. That's why its selling so well. I think the Wii U proves that real gamers have gone to PS4/XB1 and casuals to smartphones. Wii was a one time thing. The 'in between' approach isn't gonna work anymore. With Nintendo's first party game output steadily declining in quality and content, NX may be the first Nintendo console I'll not buy at launch unless it blows me away with lots of games, low price, beautiful graphics, unique third party content and modern features.

If it truly moved, there'd be more of an install base on PS4 than there is now. Plus, Xbox isn't doing so hot either. It moved, but not to PS or XB, it moved to mobile and more casual options. Wii and DS came at the right time. Apple's iphone wasn't out yet and back then, a DS or a Wii was very innovative at the time but it only did games. When apple arrived and smartphones and tablets became huge, many users moved on to those devices. Nintendo tried to recapture these players with Wii U's tablet like functionality but it was too little too late. Like I said, western 3rd parties don't sell well on Nintendo platforms even if they are suppored (Gamecube), and Nintendo really isn't a consumer whore.

Nope. The conclusion has been made that people just dont know the WiiU exists.

The same was said about the 3DS. At the very beginning it sold horrible and it was speculated consumers saw it as an upgraded DS since it looks the same and almost named the same. When the price drop and good games came it changed everything, proving people were just not interested before. This was never achieved with Wii U because it only appeals to die-hard Nintendo console fans.

Well then how can you say that people dont want the "in between" console anymore when the Wii was for everyone and the WiiU was just for die-hard Nintendo fans...?

Nintendo didn't mean to make Wii U only for die-hard Nintendo fans, they wanted it to be a Wii 2. Nintendo die-hard fans will buy anything Nintendo brings, whatever it is. But that group is very small, which I think explains the abysmal Wii U sales. The other 140m went to smartphones or PS4/XB1. I think Nintendo needs to regain those core gamers in some other way to stay relevant in the gaming industry. Casuals are in love with their smartphones. They don't have the desire to buy another system.

Yep! That price drop and the games did not make it join the Vita which the handheld console market would have look even worse!

Well if we are counting handhelds as well, then Nintendo has the most fans as of right now.

well, if they manage to get all 3ds and wii U owners, thats enought.
Seems that wii U public would get a nintendo console anyway it is. So, they just need to get back the 3DS ones.
So If NX be a handheld, that fills the 3DS role, i think thats the route.
200$ max, with pokemon, munter hunter, zelda, mario, japonese games, add also party and multiplayer games. Add functionality and marketing between mobile games and NX ones, and i think nintendo will be fine.
