Forums - Nintendo Discussion - All videos games lack checkpoints which makes them no fun... at all.

This is my probem with ALL games of today. In my opinion, checkpoints shouldn't even EXIST. Like if you die in a game, LET US START BACK WHERE WE DIED. What's the point of doing a whole course from the last checkpoint anyways?? "Oh challenges give us fun" NO ITS NOT FUN.... Keep dying over and over and having to restart everything is NOWHERE NEAR FUN. Look at Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. If I died and started where i left off I could've beaten the unfair unfun levels without wasting time.

Take LIVES OFF TOO. Whats the point of having lives?? Take lives off, and actually make your games fun!

Luigi's Manion, New Super Mario Bros U, Yoshi Wooly World, Super Mario Maker and Super Mario 3D World all suffer from this. They just depend on checkpoints and lives which is no fun at all. Escpically DK: TF. Like PLEASE. Make your games fun and let us have fun. Its' so unfair to keep depending on checkpoints and lives...and don't even remind me of Uncharted.

Also when you do go back to the last checkpoint or begining of stage. You have to collect everything else again too!

Think about it this way.  You start a level and it takes you TEN minutes to finally reach that checkpoint.... but you have to beat a final group of enemies, or final 1 out of 10 chance of making a leap, or a boss to actually achieve that checkpoint.... when you have low health too. It's stressful AND NOT FUN at all. Sorry if you disagree, but I like to buy my games for fun and not for stress. If all those games above took off checkpoints, lives and gave us the ability to go back to the spot where we died from all those games would be much much better!.. idk about Donkey Kong or Uncharted tho, they'll just be less unfair.

Btw, it feels great to be back on VGCHARTS!

That would be weird. You fight a boss, die and then start again where you left off in the boss fight...?

Gaming should be about overcoming challenges, not just about the experience imo.

I agree, every game should be played in God Mode.

Geometry Dash is the perfect game for you, sir.

Just get good.

But seriously, having strategically placed checkpoints requires the player to complete a full obstacle before moving on. If there were checkpoints every second, you could just brute force every challenge a game threw at you, which isn't fun. Basically it opens itself up to rampant exploitation.

I'm personally actually a little annoyed at some games for having an over-abundance of checkpoints. Like, when you jump off a cliff in Uncharted, you usually just spawn at the top of the cliff. It takes me out of the experience a bit by making me feel like there is never any danger.

However, the fix to that isn't just reducing the amount of checkpoints, its building around the idea of death a little more strongly, which often means having fail-states which don't result in instant death. I like the way games like Until Dawn feature fail states which don't make you retry, although the systems surrounding that (QTEs) are far from ideal.

I like to play a game called "guess the thread creator". I look at a thread title and try to guess by the thread title alone - who created it.

It was extremely obvious who created this thread by title alone.

GIven it has been awhile hasn't it? I totally guessed as well.

Exactly this. It was never fun, and now it's just getting annoying.

I agree. I ended up skipping the shootout sessions in GTA 5 as that was the only option apart from starting over and over with something that doesn't really interest me. In the end I simply suicided a couple of times when a shootout popped up until skip to next part showed up.
DK cr and tf, never finished, always the annoying parts holding me back and a chore to play co-op with the lives system. If I like a section, I'll play it again out of my own choice.

It's a difficult balance anyway, Dark Souls would be a different far less rewarding game without the bonfires. Not that it doesn't cross the line as well, put a damn checkpoint before a boss. Yet some games like DK simply get the balance wrong. Great platformer, not fun to play together.

I wish I could play this game but I'm not nearly as involved in this community as I would need to be.
