Forums - General Discussion - 4k tv or 4k monitor?

Aye yo!

So I got a question here. I'm thinking of picking up a 4k tv or 4k monitor sometime in November. Current tv i have in my room is starting to have issues with the screen and what not so i figured i might as well upgrade while im at it instead of just getting another 1080p smart tv. However for my birthday coming up(Nov) I'm also getting a PS4 Pro as a gift(no clue what im going to do with my OG PS4 yet, maybe sell it?)

So really what my question is, which would be better to get? 4k tv or 4k monitor. Currently the reason I was looking at monitors was the space issues, 4k monitors can do 32 inches as far as spacing goes(but has no HDR), 4k tvs the smallest they go is 40 inch. Now I can do 40 inch tv in this current room but I'll have to do a few work arounds to make it work due to space in the area where I have my tv.

These are the current options of 4k monitor and TV's ive been looking at

These are the current things I'm looking at. You guys know a lot more about this stuff than I do, so I figured id ask you guys, so you can clue me in on everything and educate me a bit on what you guys think is good and bad

thanks to anyone that can provide any insight

What distance are you planning to watch your new TV/monitor at?

If you're not going to be really close I'd say TV all day long. Personally I hate monitors. I spend enough time in front of a monitor at work at it is. Nothing better than sitting back on the couch in front of a 55" set. Mines 1080p mind you although it's very high end.

32" at 7ft away, not really worth it to go 4K without HDR and 10 bit color, not really at 40" either.

The Samsung KU6300 doesn't support 10 bit color either and only half of HDR specced brightness.

Not great HDR is better than no HDR of course. But if you can, better wait until 10 bit panels with HDR get into your price range.

Anyway at that distance, a good 1080p panel will still see benefits of the ps4 pro. Perhaps a budget 1080p tv until 4K 10 bit HDR becomes affordable? Treat your current tv nicely, maybe it will work for another year :)

t all comes down to what you want to do with the display....

- if you plan on connecting a PC to it and ever plan on gaming on anything higher than 60hz (60fps) and if input lag is important to you or you are into competitive gaming then a monitor will be what you need

- if you are going to do most of your gaming at or under 60fps then a HDTV is always going to be the better option as long as you aren't into competitive gaming. Cause the best 4k HDTVs in the input lag Dept have an input lag of around 18-20ms while with monitors they can be as low as 8ms or in some cases even as low as 2ms.

My personal advice, will be to get a 4k HDR HDTV. They just offer far more flexibility and future proofing. And you can't argue with the price to size advantage they have over monitors.

Oh onr last thing..... i will strongly advice that you shop around for at least a 50" 4k HDTV. Even if it means you waiying a bit to throw more money at it. There are some pretty decent 50-55" 4k HDR TVs you can find right now that are around $600-$1200 (depending on what you are going for). I'm pretty sure that if you wait till around late November or December you will get crazy deals on most of them. The way I see TV purchases; its something you are gonna probably put on everyday for the next 3-4yrs. I think they are worth spending a little bit more to get something that's above average.

I m personally not a fan of the current 4k monitors. I would personally either get ultra-wide monitors or 1440p monitors cause the panels and etc are generally better on those. I m sure hdr 4k monitors will also be coming out soon enough so I wouldn't get one atm unless you really need it.

You'll probably want a pretty big display device to benefit from 4k at that distance. There was this one guy claiming you get the benefit at like 6 ft if you have 40", I think, but most charts you can find online recommend you to have an even bigger display device. In other words, at that range 1080p would be the best choice according to a lot of charts. It's probably not all black and white, but this should give you a pretty good idea of what you're looking at here. I'd say you either move a lot closer or get a TV as big as you can, preferably at least 50" but 40" should be good too.

Go with the smallest 4K TV with HDR. If space is really your issue, think outside of the box and extend your wall out with an extendable wall mount. You will then have that space behind it for shelf space or whatnot.

Yeah 50-55 would not work. Space is the issue
