Forums - General Discussion - Twitter stock skyrockets on report that Google and Salesforce

Twitter stock has skyrocketed by more than 20% after a Friday-morning report from CNBC said that the company was moving closer to a sale and that Google and Salesforce were among the interested suitors.

Google and Salesforce aren't the only companies eyeing Jack Dorsey's startup, according to the report, which noted "several" potential bidders.

Looking at Twitter hard to imagine it was at $60/share just a few years ago before declining below $20/share this year. Given that I could see a buyout happening by a Google given track record with YouTube acquisition.

Surprised Facebook isn't going for it since they could tie it to whatsapp and Facebook.

I understand a that a platform and database consisting of thousands of pseudo-intellectual people is worth a lot of money, but how does a company actually earn money with twitter? How is it monetized or could be monetiozed? How can twitter be valuable to a shareholder?

another place that will be fucked up by google, prepare for mass flagging abilities for Twitter heroes

Advertisement you mean? You can sell ads that get promoted into certain people's Twitter feed, whether they like it or not. (They don't get added to everyone's feed, but based on your relevant interests or something like that.)
Then there's promotion through Twitter accounts that have a lot of followers. Kim Kardashian tweeting about some product would reach millions of people.

Oh, I never noticed there are ads on Twitter!

You mean the thing that Twitter already does, which is get rid of "hate speech"?

Wow, looks like my use of Twitter is threatened. I'm not exactly a fan of huge data-collecting corporations like Google. Good news for Twitter as a company though.
