Yeah, that's what I usually do, if I can. However, if I can't check the game for now, and a (trustworthy) friend of mine played it already, I ask some questions about it to see if I will probably like it or not.
The good think about talking to a friend instead of reading a review is that you can check a lot of things about the game that reviews may not explain, or even hide from the reader.
