People nowadays don't even have laptops (and maybe never saw a desktop), so the smartphone is their main computing device, used for browsing, social networking, messaging, e-mail, etc. Media consumption needs a bigger screen, but that's the role of smart TVs. People will only have a console if they game, that its only use. They will only have a desktop if they game, because there's no reason to have a desktop instead of a notebook and, for most people needs, you actually just need a phone.
So it's reasonable that the main computing device of most people is more expensive than a gaming device. It's just a phone, that costs as much as 2 PS4 pros, 1 enthuasiast grade GPU, mid-end gaming desktop or good laptop. But it actually does the same stuff these people used their laptops (that were mostly underused), cameras, car GPS, dumbphones and the list goes on and on.
I think you are underestimating what a phone does today. It's a lot of stuff. I understand that mid end devices like a Moto G do most of these stuff, but a high-end phone gives you a bit better screen, way better camera and a faster experience overall, with huge gains for games.
Also, stop complaining about losing the headphone jack. You look like the guys that cried when companies removed the 3.5' drives, optical drives or VGA ports. Tech advances. Removing the jack doesn't just allows to have thinner phones:
- More space for other components . The headphone jack is huge.
- Easier to waterproof.
- Currently, the digital/analog converter is on the phones circuitry. The phone amplifies it and outputs the audio. With a USB-C/Lightning headset, you can get the original digital signal and do the amplification on the headset itself. It means that you can buy a better phone that outputs better audio without being affected by crappy amplifiers on the phone like on current jacks.
I'm an Android guy, but I do understand their reasoning. People are hating just because it's Apple. Actually, Apple is getting more hate by removing the jack than Sammy is getting by making a exploding phone that's actually hurting people.
