Microsoft-Developed Xbox Scorpio Games Will Run Natively at 4K, Exec Says

Meanwhile, Sony boss says the majority of PS4 Pro games will be "upscaled" to 4K instead of native.

According to Microsoft Studios publishing general manager Shannon Loftis, Microsoft-developed Xbox Scorpio games will render natively at 4K instead of being upscaled to that figure.

She made the comment in an interview with USA Today recently (via NeoGAF). She said, "Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K."

The Xbox Scorpio console, or whatever Microsoft ends up calling it, will launch in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced, but Microsoft has referred to the system as a "premium" device, so you can expect it will not be cheap. The system boasts 6 teraflops of performance, making it the "most powerful console ever made," according to Microsoft.

On the other side of the aisle, Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro goes on sale in November, priced at $400. Estimates have pegged Xbox Scorpio to be more than 40 percent more powerful than the PS4 Pro. According to one Xbox higher up, the performance advantage that Xbox Scorpio has over PS4 Pro will be "obvious."

The PS4 Pro is capable of 4K. In an interview with DigitalSpy, PlayStation president Andrew House confirmed that the majority of PS4 Pro titles would be upscaled to 4K instead of running natively at that resolution.

"I would say the majority will be upscaled--at least based on the game portfolio I have seen to date," he said.

The interviewer then asked if Sony's description of 4K is perhaps misleading. House said he doesn't think it is.

"No, I don't think so," he said when asked if this could be construed as misleading. "I think that whatever the term is, it's a question of whether people see a demonstrable difference in the game experience or not, rather than the term we use to apply to it. I think that's what people are looking for and they'll make their judgement as to whether that's working for them or not."

Well, too bad those games are not 95% of the library. Also, sick of this preemptive talk. Show us the damn thing first.

4K Minecraft. Should look less blocky.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

I'm still waiting on the power of the cloud that they showed years ago that could make the Xbox One 3 times as powerful...

But will anyone be able to tell? http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-one-vs-ps4-resolution-microsoft-challenges-yo/1100-6421047/

And will they run at 30fps then? http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/frame-rate-is-more-important-than-resolution-says-xbox-one-s-phil-spencer-1261471

I'm hoping they'll create worthwhile titles that aren't part of their comfort zone "trinity" (Halo, Forza, Gears)...

My favourite MS series was Fable. Fable 2 being one of my all time favourite games. But they threw the series to the junkyard... Ori and the Blind Forest is the best game that was published by Microsoft in recent times, in my book, but that's from Moon Studios, a second party. They really need to invest more into new ideas, and develop interesting new IPs, or bring dormant ones back!

That being said, with the Scorpio getting the best version of third party games, I'll be gaming quite a bit on it. Maybe it will become my primary console, while the PS4 Pro and whatever the NX is will become first party exclusive centric consoles (although, it's already the case for Nintendo's console).

As for what the PS4 Pro will deliver, it's not native 4K. It will still be quite a step up from 1080p, and will still look great on a 4K screen. 1440p+ upscaled is much closer to native 4K, than 1080p upscaled. The picture quality will still be substantial compared to 1080p. Gosh... I really can't get FF XV out of my head. -___-

That first link. Oh dear.

There should be a difference between Scoprio's native 4K and Sony's Checkerboard 4K. Native is better than anything sub-native. But it just depends on if people care about the difference. Or if the difference is enough for people to cross over

Halo 6 and FM7 should do 4K 60 fps. At that point they'll have a Gears 4 GOTY edition with 4k support....perhaps others which are already getting HDR support like Scalebound...maybe Crackdown.

You expect 4K native games from first party from consoles billed as '4K' and 'premium'.

Forza yes, as racing games are not that intensive graphically, but I highly doubt you will see Halo 6 at 4K with 60 frames. Halo 5 had to run a highly dynamic resolution(dropping to the 800P at times) to maintain 60 frames. You might see Halo 6 at 4k with 30 frames but with lower quality effects etc.

Lol..... sony might as well announce a PS5 now for 2019 and everyday talk about how that machine will run every game natively in 4k@60fps.... and make donuts.

Cause outside some talking heads we know shit all about the scorpio yet they talk about it like it's coming next week.
