Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox One S has trouble playing some 4k Blu-ray movies

My cousin's roommate's sister's boyfriend has an xbox1s and he said the 4k playback is great!

OT : Like others have said, this is a common problem for almost all Bluray players. There seems to be some issue where you need to update the players on occasion to run the newest discs...

Really no issue YET. If the problem is there for weeks or months, then we can worry.

It is near the end of the end....

I own Deadpool, The Revenant, and Star Trek Into Darkness on 4K UHD, and haven't had a problem with any of them on my One S.

But how is the picture quality? JRPGFan wants to know!

Identical to the UBD-K8500 to my eyes.

Seems like something a patch can fix if true.

Isnt the image quality not as good as some of the real 4k blu-ray players as well?

I guess its cheap... but if it doesnt play all discs, and it does it worse than products designed for it... oh well.

Real UHD players have (ultra) superior sound quality and better picture quality and don't make as much noise. The ub900 upconverts chroma using a dedicated processor and special logarithms. Shadow detail is remarkable when your TV is calibrated correctly, which is kind of a deal maker or braker.

A wrongly set up TV (start at putting it in cinematic mode) ie not able to show the finest details, especially if the blacks are crushed. Or everything is way to vibrant (to much contrast or blacklight) , artificial sharpened  (put that value at zero) or fuzzy (to much gamma or brightness). Usually put color at warm or warm 2, since the standard tv's colour temperature tends to be too low/blue.

When those values are set up correctly which can be done using a blu ray from pixar like wall-e and look at extra's. The difference between players should become visible especially in scenes that demand subtlety.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I have The Revenent and The Heart of the Sea. I've played both of them without any issues.

My TV is perfectly calibrated.  The UBD-K8500 does not put out superior picture to the Xbox One S.

Strange my Panasonic UB900 puts out a superior picture for (regular) blu ray and dvd when I compare it with either my PS4 or denon ub1611. Anyway I don't have enough money to buy another 4k blu-ray player although what hifi confirms the ub900 offers superior picture quality over the 8500, but the main reason for better (uhd) blu ray players is better analogue out.

I just played The Revenant for a few minutes and it worked without any problem. I didn't watch the whole movie but from what I read, the movie didn't play at all for some people.

I watched Gravity the 3D version as well and it worked perfectly. No problems at all.

Lucy didn't work for me.

I also found that HDR color on The Martian was all washed out with grey bars until I disabled 24fps mode in XB1 S display settings.... so something to try if you have one.

That's too bad, because as I've learned right after the PS4 Pro presentation, 4k bluray is really important for gaming consoles. Because reasons...

Every person has something important to them that may be not be important to others.
