Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What benefit does keeping the NX a secret still have?

The first paragraph is so wrong that I wont comment on that.

To the rest, it has happened many times before. The analog stick, motion controls, controller general scheme. All came from Nintendo.Just because Sony is winning now wont mean they wont notice what their competitors are doing.

LOL

I think you misunderstood the meaning of "same experience" with " NX has the same power as the Wii U"

We really have no idea what NX is. It could be something that is both amazing but easy to copy in a year. Or perhaps they are concerned of tablet makers taking the idea. Or maybe it's a classic console and they want to ensure the competition shows their specs hand first. Maybe they've secured a third party exclusive that is vital to the reveal but isn't ready to show. There are numerous reasons to keep it hidden for now.

Sony is the one who reintroduced (they were used on the Atari 5200 and Vectrex) analog sticks as we know them today, as well as the dual stick EVERYONE uses now.  No one copied the tech used in the N64 controller, not even Nintendo.  Sony was also the one who reintroduced motion controls (again something that dates back to the Atari) back on the PS2, including developing, though never releasing, a controller the Eyetoy could track. Now, I will concede that the success of the Wii is what prompted them to actually continue developing and release the Move. Oh, and here's the Vectrex controller, a system that launched 8 months before the NES.

Look familiar? No? Replace the 1 with Select and the 2 with Start, then add a Dpad where the analog stick is. Uh oh? Nintendo copies confirmed. See, anyone can play that game.

I think they are just waiting to have a good number of guaranteed release titles with footage for each game to help sell the hardware. Just showing the system won't help as much as showing off good software.

It seems to be the normal thing now to wait for the last minute to release details for companies to release. I believe Microsoft announced the Xbox one six months before release. Sony took seven. I believe we will hear something next month before Halloween. Otherwise I would think they will delay the NX. (Like we need that!)

As for why they are doing this it is probably because they do not want others to start copying/countering their product. Remember Smartglass or the sixaxis and its motion control? Nintendo just doesn't want competitors to be prepared to fight the NX. The best way to fight is with the element of surprise.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Do Not Click here or else I will call on the eye of shinning justice on you.

If the hook is that they are making a unified os like Nintendo has hinted at before when they announce the home console to be released in March they will have to announce the companion handheld at the same time to be released next holiday or later. And you will have to wait for the hand held because the hook would be that every device with the Nintendo os will be able to run all the same games without exception.

If that is true the longer they can reasonably wait the better because they would be announcing a handheld more than a year away in order for it to be strong enough to keep the promise stated above without having a terrible battery life. I am interested if any of you would be interested in something like this with cartridges and a account system you could easily play games between systems

If anyone with technical knowledge knows how likely this is I would like to hear it because you may need to wait till 2018 for a handheld that could do that.

Sorry, but Nintendo giving that excuse is complete BS.  If the rumors are true that it is a handheld hybrid that is above the Wii U, but below the XBO, in terms of graphics, what is there to counter/copy.  MS doesn't seem interested in entering the handheld market, while Sony seems done with it after the disappointing sales of the Vita.  Nintendo really has none of the other in the Big 3 to compete with them here. They'd basically be competing with mobile, which seems to be doing just fine with its normal tablet and smartphone gaming, as tablets and phones that have tried to add controls have not seen success.  The only ones I see ripping them off would be some Chinese company whose product would be extremely niche.  And having graphics higher than the Wii U is impressive for a handheld, but that's not exactly going to win over the core gamer who will be looking at Pro and Scorpio in the future.

Personally, to me it comes off as Nintendo not knowing exactly how to market the last product Iwata left them with which follows his lower specs/cheaper price model.  A product they most likely want to change, but won't out of honor to his memory.

Well Nintendo doesn't exactly trumpet technical specs even when launching a console, right?
That info is usually derived from tear-downs etc, AFAIK.
So to expect it ahead of launch is silly IMHO.
Obviously Nintendo doesn't sell their experience on basis of technical capacity.
Showing of games and "experience" in general terms is what they want to focus PR on.
And yeah, you would think if they have a shred of self respect, their engineers would like to show their work off,
but Nintendo don't have a Cerny, and just don't have a focus on technical abilities, period.
And on the flip side, they don't have a Cerny, or console architect who they need to let design games.
