Forums - PC Discussion - How do you get good sound on your PC? Bass and treble controls? Equalizer?

In the past when using Windows XP I remember on the desktop controls on the bottom right there was a sound option that letted you control the bass level and treble of your audio. And running MP3's through Winamp I could use the built in equalizer for even more control of the sound to my liking.

But in Windows 10 there is no control for bass and treble! And when enjoying music through YouTube or Spotify they don't have any equalizer.

I use on-board audio like everybody else (the default built in audio on the PC muthaboard). When I check the audio controls/drivers or whatever in Windows 10 it says it's from Realtek. I can control the volume, the balance (left and right) and put Dolby on and off. Nuffin else.

A few monfs ago I downloaded a custom equalizer (called Peter's Peace GUI Equalizer something) but the damn thing stops working all the time and a PC restart doesn't fix it anymore. How on earth would I be able to determine why it does that? WTH do I do?

I don't like the "default sound" when I enjoy my music and sometimes it even sounds disgusting.

What is treble anyway and how does it relate to the high frequency controls in an equalizer? Is it the same thing essentially? Else I dont understand why Microsoft removed treble & bass from Win 10.

And I bought these awesome Sennheiser HD 558 analog headphones (no mic) for less than 85 Euros thanks to a member giving that tip in a thread earlier. They're incredible but it sux that I can't utilize them to the full potential.

Funny you bring this up. I was like what you can't change treble or bass in Windows 10. I'm trying to find the way to do it in Windows 7. Why the fuck did they dumb sound settings down? I'm sure I could boot up my XP computer and it would have all the options right there in front of me.  I hate when they dumb shit down and take away options.

Hmm? Need to check the moment I am at home. Got a pci-e sound blaster card. Whatever the correct name is, and a 5.1 logitech soundsystem.

If you have money to spend on good headphones then get yourself a fitting sound card. I recommend the ASUS Xonar DG. It's an entry level sound card but it's 10 times better than any onboard sound. Of course it includes a software for plenty of control.

Anything that isn't a potato on windows these days comes with Realtek HD audio manager (provided that you use most on-board sound chips... and they are in most motherboards... you need to install sound drivers as well, of course), said manager is in control panel (the proper one, not the limited win10 one) in hardware and sound -> realtek HD audio manager.

It has a bunch of options for controlling audio.

Well, if you have decent headphones or acoustic system you won't need an equaliser to get a good sound. Equaliser just fixing problems with bad setup or bad hearing habits.

I have always been partial to Sound Blaster cards. The best one they have for Music/Movies only is the older SoundBlaster Audigy RX.
If you want a mix of Gaming and Music/Movie then I would suggest SoundBlaster Z is the best option.

Just a minor warning, creative has never been good with drivers and sometimes depending on your PC config you may have to try a couple different versions to find the one that works best for you.

From my testing they have the best sound cards in their price range.

I could have sworn on the sound settings in Windows XP you could click on advance options and change your equalizer that way.  I forgot about Realtek which I quickly change my equalizer to rock.  Just seems like it was easier to tweak the sound settings in XP without having to go to another program.

Buying an external sound card and a decent sound set or headphones usually do the trick. In general you don't mess with the sound and you never equalise sound, that makes it sound terrible.

In general treble is the cleanliness of the sound, but too much treble makes your audio sounds shallow and sharp. Bass adds warmth and depth, but too much bass and your audio gets overshadowed and lacks detail. Best not to mess with it though unless you know what you are doing.
