My limited understanding from the internet is that it depends on what ones plastic box says on it.

They all say Made in China.  How am I supposed to know which one is the best?

neither is that important.

its all about gameplay

Of Course Story.

But good graphics can be a brilliant way of making the story more meaningful by seeing emotion on the characters faces.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

A good story engages me better than good graphics BUT.....not all great games really need an engaging story, due to their categories.
Puzzle, sports, simulation games and even some action games (like Splatoon) don´t need a story at all to be great. Sometimes, just good design and gameplay ideas are enough for a great game.

Short term impact: Graphics

Long term impact: Story.

You very, very rarely forget a game that has a great story, even after 15-20 years there are games with a good story that I still remember fondly today.

But graphics? I can barely remember playing Crysis 3 for a few hours. I remember being impressed by the graphics back then, but that's about it.

Neither if the Gameplay isn't any good.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Consoles I PS4 Pro I Xbox One S 2TB I Wii U I Xbox 360 S

To be honest actually I think a good story is the rarest commodity in video games.

It's easier even to do good game play than it is to do a really good story. There are dozens of games every year with good game play, but very few with a legitimately good story.

Truth is anyone good enough to write a great story likely isn't going to want to work in video games in the first place; why slave away in some dark office for hours when you could live in sunny California in the and hob-knob with movie stars and supermodels as a screenwriter.

A good story will always trump a few pretty sparkles, plus graphics age, the story the game tells does not.

EDIT: Unless we are talking fighting games, I don't think they need plot.

Punch a dude, kill a dude.... good plot

Story by light years.I mean, this comparison is actually insulting, in the sense that story is simply far more important than graphics and nowadays, depending on what type of game you are making and what you plan to achieve, the story can be as important, if not more, than the gameplay.

I know It can be seen as this way, but I asked this, because I have talked to people of younger generations than my own, and they have said that all the want in games is good graphics, not all of them think this, but some that I have asked have said so. That is why I wanted to see what everyone thinks, that is why I chose not to add gameplay
