Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Is this the beginning of the end for Microsoft consumer based hardware?

The future of Windows Phone is uncertain. I'm thinking they are gonna do a big push on phones that also function as a desktop PC. That seems like their best advantage to other devices.

The tablets are apparently doing well.

X1 is still very relevant and being used as a vehicle for Windows 10.

HoloLens is still in development.

Microsoft is going to be pushing gaming PCs. Hopefully that goes better than Steam machines.

With that said, it looks like MS is still interested in consumer hardware.

Mobile was never part of their identity, the Xbox brand however is. X1 didn't tank hardenough to be discontinued. They might though if the next gen flops harder than this one.

Next gen for MS is likely another X1.

That way the userbase keeps growing but more complex games may not support the OG X1.

I think they should concentrate on software, services rather than hardware. Though I still do not understand their logic of making Xbone games on PC though. Does this really makes them money ?

Surface and xbox are doing fine. Their phones not so much. Which is a shame because it has a good interface. Microsoft needs to practically give out their phones for free and hope developers develop for it.

I think he is just trimming the fat and concentrating on what makes money / growing business.

I prefer the surface to the Ipad pro, but with Google drive and it's functionality growing as well as its user base, Office 365 might have growing competition over the next 5-10 years.

Yes, selling more copies of their games definitely makes them money. Especially so if they release them exclusively to the windows store so they can keep 100% of the revenue from it.

Yeah but that would not be much I guess. To me they are encouraging more PC gamers that way than console gamers.

They already tried to turn mobile phones into PCs. It failed miserably. Their mobile business is done for. It's a shame because windows mobile had potential. But they allocated more money for promotion instead of R & D, because it was half backed good idea.

Surface hardware is very popular and Xbox is making a profit, Lumia was unsuccessful, they continued, it was still unsuccessful, they bought it and continued... it was still unsuccessful.

Very different :D. Also, it was to push a unsuccessful piece of software (Microsoft mobile software) and the Xbox and surface push Windows, and lets be honest, with no Windows, there isn't much Microsoft.

Somewhat dated thinking.

Isn't the office brand the biggest bulk of revenue?

Server and Cloud. But yes Office is bigger than Windows.  Windows is 4th, behind server/Cloud, Gaming and Office.

The last time windows revenue was shown seperately in Microsoft financials, it was about 20% of Microsoft revenue, that was in 2013 I believe

It is now in "More personal computing" the division that contains Windows, hardware and some others, which is at $12bn revenue for first 6 months.

Windows by itself is now less than 10% of Microsoft revenue.

Gaming revenue is actually above windows? That is surprising. I had feeling that Office was above, given how many business require it.
