Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Is this the beginning of the end for Microsoft consumer based hardware?

The recent news around the web reports that Microsoft will be discontinuing it’s Lumia line of phones from December 2016 and today there were further reports suggesting that there may be no successor to its current fitness/ smart wearable product the Microsoft Band 2.  I really do like Microsoft consumer product but with news as outlined below, does this spell the beginning of the end of Microsoft’s venture into hardware under its current CEO's (Satya Nadella) leadership? Could Microsoft go the way IBM did some years ago with an emphasis on corporate services and away from the consumerable product model?

I doubt it. Lumia was dead anyway. Though the band will be a wait and see, though considering its not receiving marketing and it was priced at 250, I can see why. I'm starting to worry about Nadella's strategy at Microsoft, and wondering if he is just riding off the success of Ballmer (like the Surface and cloud and office 365). But if he is dumb enough to pull an IBM...

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

The phones were not successful and i assune the bands didn't reach their expectations so i think those are done for now. I doubt its the end of their hardware, they will keep trying new things and if they sell it will continue. For exwmple holoence. Also the Surface 3 and Xbox One S are recent hardwarr releases because past Xboxes and Surfaces has sold well enough that MS will continue to expand on them with new hardware for xbox and surface.

Doubt it. Windows Phones ever since iOS and Android hit were laughable. Only second to Blackberry. Important and popular apps were (and still are) missing for the ecosystem while charging the same as Android phones. I can't for the life of me understand why would anyone choose a WP after all these apps (just to name a few) are missing:

Even if a person doesn't need those apps, the person is still paying essentially the same price as they would for an Android phone. I guess OS smoothness but I would trade 0.03ms of lag for an official youtube/maps app any day (And not to mention millions of others). It was only a matter of time before this happened anyway.

But I don't think this will be the end for MS hardware. Their Surface line is doing quite well and their xbox consoles are doing well also. They aren't winning the console wars or the tablet wars but they aren't exactly getting rekt either (compared to others).

They're actually doing well in the tablet market. Windows tabs already have double digit share in the market.

I mean how they aren't winning. They're picking up share at a rapid pace.

Edit: Nvm, I know what you mean't now.

Xbox aside, that would mean MS getting out of Surface. My understanding is that Surface is actually doing OK for MS. It might not be booming, but I thought it was doing steady and profitable business.

Mobile was never part of their identity, the Xbox brand however is. X1 didn't tank hardenough to be discontinued. They might though if the next gen flops harder than this one.

HoloLens, Surface, Surface Book, Xbox One, Xbox One, Xbox Scorpio were or will be all released during Nadella as A CEO.

Lumia phones are great. They really are. Too bad they did not do that well.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
