Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will PS5 have to be backwards compatible now?

Tagged games:

the way the things are going, maybe even the ps4 pro could be forwards compatible with ps5.

86-64 chips, its kinda easy to see where or what we will get in the PS5. Just think of whatever processor AMD will make on a 7nm process whenever that comes along. And that's what will be in the PS5.

And not only will it be BC, the current PS4/PS4pro will play it's games too. Only difference is that the PS4 will probably run them at sub 720p@30fps, the PS4pro will run them at 1080p+@30fps and the PS5 will be 4k@30/60fps.

Better pick up your day one PS Quintuple, before they remove it in the PS Quintuple Slim.

God I hope not.

Could you imagine what Uncharted 4 or The Witcher 3 would be like if they had to run on the PS3 too? Power is more than just visuals. Physics, rendering styles, animations...

I'd rather developers (at least, exclusive developers) just be able to make their games on the most up to date console hardware.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Nothing is ever black and white. There will be way around this. Focus will shift to the PS5, and everything else will just get cut down ports of it.

100% it will have BC

Whether or not they wanted to make PS4 backwards compatible, the fact is it was infeasible. Sony built the PS3 with the very obtuse cell architecture (which made coding for it a nightmare) and emulating it on contemporary PC-like architecture (like that of the PS4) is practically impossible unless it had a lot LOT more juice than the PS4 has.

As for the PS5, I don't see them deviating from the PC-like architecture that both the PS4 and the XbOne are currently using, so backwards compatibility with the PS4 may well be possible.
However, one thing publishers and console manufacturers alike have discovered this generation is that re-releases are very lucrative.
So they might not be motivated to add backwards compatibility when leaving it out creates a new, albeit artificial market.

I want to agree. But a 480 x 272 PSP game on a 4K TV would be nearly unplayable.

It cannot be helped. Fate of all classics games.

I remember the PSP had a cable to allow you to play on your television :D so anything is possible right, they could also use a big box, many of the classic games do that, little bit of arcade feel

I highly doubt it will. At most, a few games will be cross buy. You pay for the PS5 version and get a digital download of the PS4 version, as well. But the PS4 isn't going to run PS5 discs. Devs are going to be focused on getting the most out of that 10+ Tflops, with some probably outsourcing ports to other systems.

@ OP

If they stick with AMD, it should be relatively easy. Personally, I'm surprised they haven't come out with a PS1 emulator for the PS4. It should be pretty damn easy to do and they could keep selling those on PSN, instead of only being able to buy them with a PS3/Vita.

My guess, or hope, for PS5 is to have it support the PS1, PS2, and PS4. Not sure how well a PS3 emulator would work out, but if anyone can do it, it'd be Sony. But, I'd still be happy with just those 3.

PS4 to PS4 pro is like overclocking your processor and buying a new graphics card.
Buying a PS5 will be like buying a new computer.

All your old games will run better and games that wouldn't run on PS4/PS4Pro anymore will run on the new console
Pc gaming has always been the base used by consoles for progression, they are now using its hardware upgrades and software capabilities.
