The PC port of Little King's Story is trash and borderline unplayable at times, and this is coming from someone who loves the original Wii title.

In other news so it seems like almost all series except for Story of Seasons will hit Steam which is pretty interesting.

Oh, so thats why it got butchered by reviewers... to bad, I doubt that it should have been a hard port considering the age of the title.

The port was just mismanaged, not only was the game coded by aliens, Marvelous AQL made the last minute decision to XSEED to have the game run at 60fps

And I'll keep buying them (and not playing them if you've seen my library ) provided they are good ports.

Little King's Story owners: 1.929 (according to Steamspy, one of them is me). EDIT: Beaten by Basil.

In addition to the reasons others already mentioned, I think the LKS port is too expensive ($ 24.99 / 22.99 €) to attract more buyers, and let's not forget that most PC-only players have probably never heard of the game.

OT: Good to hear, bring them on.

I wonder what they mean when they say that Little King's Story "hasn't sold particulary well", specially given that the game wasn't a blockbuster on Wii or Vita.

I mean, there's niche and then there's selling < 2k in a month on sale at an already discounted price.

It's going to be very, very interesting to see how this situation evolves over the coming years.  I don't doubt for a second that the majority of Japanese games going forward are going to find their way to Steam, and I really can see the attraction because it's as he mentioned - it's a one-time investment that'll pay for years.

Yet we're already seeing the bubble burst somewhat - for example, compare the sales of the Neptunia games to Mugen Souls.  Same developer, all competent ports, yet the former have seen explosive sales due to getting in there early while the latter has sold abysmally.  Sure, those sales will probably be made up down the line, but will selling a few hundred more copies at sub £5 in a year's time really make up for it?

(That's not even mentioning the efforts of Aksys which are the very definition of why Steam porting is more than just a quick investment - terrible ports, terrible sales.  So while it certainly seems there's easy money to be made on Steam, you have to put the effort in).

Anyway, regardless of what happens I hope XSEED start working on 3DS games soon.  They'd be stupid to leave the money from Story of Seasons on the table in the wake of Stardew Valley's runaway success.

True, it is expensive for a port, but overpricing on steam is not limited to those:

Quality titles, sure, and I like the option of buying Japanese games on steam, but at those prices... yeah. Never.

Not a PC gamer but im all for anything that leads to more niche Japanese stuff being successful in the West.

“PC gamers are very demanding when it comes to play options, and that's something that's been difficult to relay to our Japanese development partners that are used to working within a very confined environment on consoles"

I am glad he is acknowledging the issue cause it really is the thing that puts their review from a positive one to a negative one. PC gaming is different than consoles gaming and gamers expect much more things. I m glad this new found love for steam Japan has though, it is wonderful.

If you look at VGC data on Mugen Souls in US/EU its sold 39k/16k and current steamspy sales for it are 16k, I'd say that is quite good sales for a very Niche game on Steam that released very late and thats a little under 11 months of sales, They are right about the one time investment though,  Over the next 3 years it could be up to 30k sales and another 5 down the line up at 50k still ticking in a little profit for them.

I do think we will start seeing Japanese developers releasing within a few months on the PC after the console version is out moving closer and closer to a simutaniously release, I think over the next year or two we will also see that a lot more Japanese developers have started the development of the game with PC in mind from the beginning which will tie in with my first point along with better quality releases.

As the library of niche Japanese games gets larger and less time to wait for the ports it will lead to more using it as platform and leading into higher sales across the board. In the long game I think there is a good market on PC for developers to take advantage of and the future for the fans is looking good.

That's the thing with it though (and it's a mistake I made too) - what's behind those hard figures?  For starters, Mugen Souls cost $20 at launch vs. a likely $50 for the PS3 version.  Except if you bought it in the first week it was 40% off ($11.99), making it even cheaper.  Valve are still taking their 30% cut of that too, just like the console manufacturers.

I'm sure the sales are fine, otherwise they wouldn't have picked up Mugen Souls Z too.  But that's more where my comparison was coming in, since that game doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast and it surely costs money to pay for these games to be ported.

On another note, I don't get the whole "it's a late port" mentality  XCOM 2 is coming to consoles soon and is a late port of a PC game, yet it's being sold at full price.  If anything "it's a late port" with Steam games shouldn't be a factor because the games nearly always launch at a bargain price with even more of a discount if you buy in the first week.  I wish all the late ports I pay for on Vita had such massive amounts off their pricing!

They are aware of the success of Stardew Valley but they aren't willing to jump to PC for the series.

RPG Site: Have you ever explored Steam due to its increasing popularity as a way for Japanese developers making profit in the West, and have you seen Stardew Valley before?

Hashimoto: I have been watching Stardew Valley even before its launch, so I do know of it. For the Steam version or PC version, that is not impossible but I just want to see where the users move. PC is not very friendly to kids. I just want to make sure everyone can enjoy the game when I port to different platforms.

Plus I wouldn't call the Boku series niche really https://gaminggamma.com/2016/05/27/xseed-has-highest-sales-on-record-thanks-to-story-of-seasons-and-senran-kagura/
