Forums - Sales Discussion - Charting the shifting balance between November & December (U.S. HW sales)

The fact that I'm the first person to post in this thread proves that this website is for fanboys and is no longer (or maybe it never has been) about sales talk.

Fantastic thread, really appreciate this analysis on the holiday season in the United States. The numbers this year should be extremely high, for not just the PS4 or Xbox, but probably for the 3DS too with Pokemon and its resurgence

Where do you get your NPD sales for the months? I am really interested in seeing the PS1, PS2, N64, GC and XB monthly sales.

I think this is mainly because Black Friday sales aren't usually confined to Friday any longer, but generally last nearly a week and are usually more aggressive than any sales in December. Plus, Black Friday is becoming much easier to shop (at the expense of the poor retail workers just wanting to spend Thanksgiving with their families). In the past, the best deals were usually confined to a six-hour or so doorbuster window, and the stores would be so flooded that going involved waiting in line for hours just to find out everything was sold out. Now, with stock boosted and the windows expanded to that Thursday and Friday, and considering most stores stay open all night, it's easy to walk into a thinned out store, pick up everything you want for the holidays, and to be out within a much shorter period of time.

Seems like November is becomeing more and more important.

I can see November beating december this year because of Pokemon and the PS4 Pro. Also if you dont mind can compare software for Nov and Dec?

It's a sad state of affairs when this thread has only 4 posts after 6 hours. not like the good old days.

Anyway fantastic thread and I really enjoyed going through those graphs. Good job!

Can't go over the minutiae right now but just have to say awesome data collection. Thanks for sharing this great effort.

Wow, amazing December sales in 2009.

Certainly interesting to see how BF's increased popularity has affected sales. Worth remembering too that the only time November beat December was in 2013, which is certainly because of the PS4 shortages that month

Awesome work.... How the hell did I miss this? what was happening two days ago????!!

I think the recent boom in November sales is due to the rise of online shopping. If it were possible to gather some sort of data we will probably see that the rise of online shopping is directly proportional to the rise of November sales.

For whatever reason. If anything I think November sales has taken from every other month and not from december. Cyber Monday started proper around 2008 even though it became an official thing around 2005. If you notice prior to 2005 /6/7 November sales were always around half the sales of December. But from 2008 it started climbing and now it's basically matching december sales.

And 2013 is an anomaly, cause in that November both the PS4/XB1 were released.

Interesting thread as always Shadow.

I wonder if this trend will continue. You wouldn't think companies were interested in having that many of their yearly units move at $50 off on Black Friday.
