Forums - Movies & TV - Anime recommendations for a beginner?

Death Note and One Piece should be enough for the beginning. :)

Around the Network

I have another question for those here: how good are the Persona 3 and Persona 4 anime? I really enjoy the games, so I'm wondering if the anime is a decent watch.

I'm fine with people recommending non-action anime. I just wanted to give people some info so that they would have an idea of what to recommend. I'll check that anime out if I have the chance. Thank you!

Nice, that's even better. I just think if you're getting into Japanese culture, you'd appreciate something more grounded.

Manga is also a good option, if you don't mind reading. Neither medium will completely teach you the language, but reading manga made it easier for me to pick up on random vocab. In One Piece, for example, most of the powers have very simple names that are repeated over and over, so you can't help but pick the words up.

So One Punch Man is like Superman? Or like how in Persona 4 Chie does her Galactic Punt?

It's a superhero anime, but it's mostly a comedy. It revolves around a comically overpowered main character who struggles for recognition, and is usually ignored due to misunderstandings and the fact that his fights are always too short too appreciate.

If you watch it as a comedy, you'll enjoy it. Like Boutros said, it's a basically a parody of older anime like Dragonball Z, but I think anyone can appreciate the fantastic animation and the humor.

I may start reading manga, but that's a bit harder because in order to get it in Japanese I'll basically have to import it. For anime, I believe I can just get the local copies? (Does anyone know if you can take off the English subtitles?).

Don't watch Monster because nothing will be as good afterwards.

I watched it based on recommendations like this and found ubearably terrible. It was absolutely terrible and would recommend against it strongly.

Yu Yu Hakusho is all you need.
