Whatever MS does in '17, even if its an upgradeable console, will be answered with PS5 in 2019 at the latest. |
Which will then be answered in 2020 with a new XBox.
Which is fine, but it basically does render the old generation model of game consoles effectively moot. It takes developers at least a year to get used to new hardware, realistically it's even more than that these days, shortening the console cycle to half (3 years instead of 6), basically is going to create a development state where developers are just constantly making one game at 5-6 different settings and never really maxing out the higher end hardware because they still need to sell to the older models ... which is basically a PC environment.
The old generation model was probably due to be extinct anyway because it wasn't realistic to expect developers to tackle a monstrous graphical leap every 5-6 years ... such leaps incur huge leaps in development costs and look at all the developers that have gone bankrupt the last 5-10 years. That concept slowing down and being phased into generational "leaps" that are more frequent, but far less noticable was likely always going to happen.
