all good news for Nintendo- Not so much for their console customers

Oh, that's true.
That might be the first interesting mobile game for me. I loved Dr. Mario on my Game Boy.

Just to clarify it's free to start, but to get the full game you have to pay.
It's a "full" game too apparently (meaning lots of levels).
The best scenario for marketing:Not only you pay zero for it, but also make money out of it.
Just look at the stock market value of nintendo.Jumped from 28 billion to around 35 billion in what, 1 hour?Expecting to its peak to be higher than Pokemon Go surge.
My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Why not? I highly doubt this game took up much in the way of resources. Pokemon Go actually led to an increase in sales for XY/ORAS, and a spike in hardware sales.
Actually, I though of something now:Wasnt Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to be the first two Nintendo mobile games?

Welp if it helps Nintendo to make not-trashy games like Farce, Color Trash, amiibo Festival and SF0.. then I'm all in

There was supposed to be three Nintendo mobile games this fiscal year ... Super Mario Run is the third game, Nintendo likely saved the announcement for the Apple Event.

Think this as a marketing move. Its a move that will cover itself in costs(and make billions at the same time for Nintendo), but its main purpose its to sell the main games in the consoles. Its a new level of marketing.
