When i say conventional, I mean a dedicated home console unlike the rumors we have been hearing about the NX. To me it seems like Nintendo have no interest in competing with Sony and MS in terms of hardware specs, obtaining major third party AAA titles/exclusives/marketing rights and jumping on the latest hardware innovations such as 4k gaming etc. I think the Wii U was the last major attempt for Nintendo in terms of a conventional home console in that it was quite powerful for a Nintendo console(especially compared to the original Wii) and that it did not completely focus on a gimmick. The Wii U included HDMI output and produced great visuals. It was more like the Gamecube part II.

I personally think that from here on in, Nintendo will try and distinquish themselves from Sony/MS and produce consoles that are in their own niche. I don't think we will see another situation like the 6th generation era where it was Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube all being quite similar. It seems the Gamecube's relative failure in terms of sales had extinguished Nintendo's desire to produce a visual powerhouse console with innovations such as mode 7 in the SNES or edge-anti aliasing on the Nintendo 64.

What do you guys think?

I say lets wait and see what the NX is before jumping to conclusions. We may have one very soon. Not gonna bet on it or anything, but this seems like a tread for AFTER the NX is revealed.

I don't think so. The market is not very open to conventional consoles anymore. Microsoft is very successful and it's struggling to keep up with Sony. I think in the end Sony will be the only one making traditional consoles, I hope Nintendo can be able to evolve and make some sort of mainstream device once again, but I don't think there's enough space for a Nintendo traditional console.

How is WiiU like a GCN2?? I mean aside from them both being flops.
GCN has an arguably better library, was much more powerful for the time (WiiU isn't "quite powerful for a Nintendo console") and didn't rely on any real gimmick.

Anyway more on topic probably not, don't see wjy they would. Maybe 1 more but not after they have switched to hybrid consoles. The market doesn't seem to want that from them and it doesn't make sense to keep making them if nobody will buy them. Handhelds are getting to the point now where running upscaled versions of their games in a TV is a perfectly fine gaming experience. Nintendo have the handheld market on lock so I don't see why they don't offer t more resources into that market while making that the way to play their games on your TV at the same time.

It really depends on NX's success, which is rumored to be anything but conventional. But because of the fact that Nintendo sees themselves as an entertainment/toy company, they are going to want to create experiences rather than logical progressions and installments.

I did see the Wii U as more of a return to form after the original Wii. The Wii U transitioned from standard/enhanced definition of the Wii(which supported 480P via component at best) to full 1080P via HDMI. The Wii U also supported better online functionality and at least was in a similar realm of power compared to Xbox One/PS4, where the Wii was a generation behind the PS3/Xbox 360. Gamecube did have a far better library and 3rd party support for sure and was more powerful at the time no doubt.

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Its a "red ocean" going by nintendos own words.
They keep saying they rather go to a blue one.

Basically its hard to compete with sony & ms, so why bother? try to find a market those two dont adress that well, and go for that instead.

It depends on how well the NX does I guess.

No. After the Wii/DS is not worth anymore. There's more to gain outside of the red ocean.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Seems to me that eventually they'd have no choice! I think they'll save that for the very last resort though. After they've tried absolutely everything else they can possibly come up with.
