This is just ridiculous. I dont understand any of it.

See Soundlight's example. You can take cash and do various things with it. Invest in other assets being a big thing. I think the key thing they did the past year, was buy back stock about 1 billion of that 3.3 billion right there.

Then how are they only going to lose 500M if the NX is a failure? I mean since the 3DS did well and yet they lost over 2B on the WiiU...

Well I said one thing they did (might be the biggest of that 3.3 billion), they could have done various other things, I am not going to go into every single asset and showcase what is gone up and down.

Meh, maybe not. Considering Sony is another Japanese company, and has a much larger appeal/audience in Japan+WW, I would suspect Nintendo would choose to go with them if they were aiming for just one. Of course, I think they would probably just go multiplat if they were going to release on a home console.

Sony would have no chance. Microsoft is way bigger and would offer way more money, Sony doesn't have that kind of cash.

Asking price on Nintendo would probably start in the $40 billion range, largest thing Sony has ever bought was I think Columbia Pictures for $3.4 billion back in the 80s when they had a lot more money.

Plus that Microsoft has a bigger motivation,   the coveted success in Japan, in  a big market where they don't exist...

At a $35-40 billion sticker price, even MS probably shies away. I don't think MS gives *that* much of a fuck about the video game business to invest that much money.

The only companies I could see ponying up the price for Nintendo would be Apple or Google in the event that there becomes some kind of content bidding war in which Nintendo could help them sell a lot more phones.

Even for Microsoft, Nintendo's price point would be steep. Their largest purchase is Skype at $8.5 billion.

We're not talking about buying Nintendo.  We're talking about them publishing their games on another console.

Sony and Nintendo does not have a great history. I also think MS would throw money at them.

I highly doubt Sony and Nintendo look at each other like they did back in the mid-late 90's.  I'm pretty sure the heads of Sony have quite a bit of respect for those at Nintendo. I know for a fact that Shuhei Yoshida does.  I also think there's a little more to it than just money when it comes to Nintendo.  I think not disappointing their fans is a big part of what they try to do, even if they don't always succeed on the HW side of things.  And going to MS just because of money is something that would disappoint many gaming fans, especially in Japan and EU.

Goodness - what happened to this topic? It now has very little to do with Nintendo at all.

It happens, sadly only takes one person to derail a whole thread. On the bright side, maybe someone learned basic comparisons.

All I see is people saying "but if they fail it's over for their HW market" like, really? they will try again with other idea. Sometimes I think those opinions are by kids or people who don't know anything about business. I could mention a lot of companies with failed products and now look at them, sony being one, MS being one, Samsung being one, Apple being one. It's kinda incredible honestly how people think everyone is Sega and kimishima is just going to say "okay! we are done with this business! Fuck all those years!"

I think Bill Gates offered Mr. Yamauchi $20 billion for Nintendo in the late 90s and was still interested circa 2004, but Yamauchi turned the offer down (though he *did* consider it apparently, he did not say no straight away).

Keep in mind $20 billion in 1999 inflation adjusted is almost 30 billion today.

As fas some type of purchase goes, Nintendo is waaaay out of Sony's league, Nintendo would be a target that only the "big boys club" like Google, Apple, and MS would have the money for.

It is about how much Nintendo is worth today (32Billionish), but I think if Nintendo really leveraged brand and wanted to be sold, the selling price would be higher.
