Forums - Sales Discussion - Is this game over for Sony?

Diomedes, RR7 and Gundam haven't sold 150k, barely over 100k at this point. You are being a bit wild with some of your numbers. PS2 tie ratio was definitely better than PS3 has been, but with 3-4 times as much hardware sold at the same time. This is a massive difference. Honestly, PS3 has looked more like Gamecube, Dreamcast launch than PS2 / GBA / DS launch - these are the consoles that did big numbers. At this rate you'd struggle to see PS3 doing much over 5-6m numbers in Japan. And as for the games listed, most are sequels!! DMC FOUR, MGS FOUR etc etc. Now this isn't a bad thing in itself but with the console market in decline in Japan and gamers seemingly becoming bored with the same old titles then this won't be enough. Ridge Racer is pretty much dead as a major franchise, Tekken did nothing on PSP and Tekken 4/5 did poorly on PS2, Virtua Fighter hasn't done much better recently, DMC has been declining with each version - DMC 3 only did 250k, MGS will likely do a solid 500-750k, but to be honest only FF XIII looks like doing much over a million at the moment, but I think even that will be down. With a 20m+ userbase and plenty of hype, FF XII "only" did 2.35m in the end, XIII will probably struggle to reach 2m. Everbody said the same with the PSP launch - wait for Gran Turismo (still), Square RPGs (didn't Valkyrie Profile do well - FFIII, DQMJ, FFXII:RW, DQ IX, Seiken Densetsu all head to DS, most likely to feature on Wii), Winning Eleven bombed, Dynasty / Samurai warriors etc. Unfortunately, with the exception of GT and Final Fantasy, Sony doesn't really have any franchises, in Japan at least, capable of single-handedly selling the console. Of course there will be some successes - in the vein of Monster Hunter Portable - but all the traditional big guns (Tekken, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Winning Eleven, Dynasty Warriors, Everybodys Golf) are on the decline. 2006 was a poor year for PS2 despite some big games on paper- RPGs especially - but most failed to perform. With an obviously smaller userbase, an uphill struggle, a prohibitive price, no head start and strong competition from Wii this time around, I can only see a massive fall from grace for Sony on their sinking ship...

I would like to say your are being overly critical. Sony's strength has never been on one game alone and that has been the point. Ratings wise and sales wise Sony has had the most exclusive hits on thier PS1 and PS2 consoles. I expect the same this time around. To gauge the success of a system trying to use on game is pretty silly. If you want to get picky on points, Zelda's Twilight princess has recieved less attention and sales than the previous zelda's. Here is a fact, and it might be a sticking point in this future of these consoles, in addition to the sequels and reimagined games that came from the PS1 and went over to the PS2, The PS2 also had a large selection of successful exclusive games that were new to the system. Now with that in mind if the PS3 continues that trend there is no question that it is going to be just fine in the market. It is way to early to be calling out the death of the system especially when there are no real facts to stand behind on the future of the system. Either for or against it is still speculation but based off of the past it is more likely to believe that the PS3 will deliver on games than it is to outright fail. http://www.vgcharts.org/japtotals.php?name=&maker=&console=PS2 http://www.vgcharts.org/usatotals.php?name=&maker=&console=PS2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_selling_computer_games#Sony_PlayStation_2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_selling_computer_games#Sony_PlayStation besides I see more than a select "FEW" titles that helped the PS2 become a success.

Games make me happy! PSN ID: Staticneuron Gamertag: Staticneuron Wii Code: Static Wii - 3055 0871 5802 1723

i think you pretty much summed it all up Dreamscast, sony is clearly walking the way to hell good riddance, sony only caused harm in the game industry

Diomedes1976 said: Well its clear you have your own agenda and somehow you wish the PS3 to fail ,but I dont agree with you .In Japan the PS3 is the only "next-gen" console and it will sell no matter what .If the Wii manages DS-like hit and manage to get octagenaries and little children to the new motion-sensing Nintendogs and Brain Training out there it may eventually win in total numbers but that doesnt mean the PS3 wont have the support of the hardcore gamer market .And not all the companies can survive releasing mind quiz minigames and such things ,so the big publishers will keep publishing in the PS3 .In the most wanted Top 20 games the first 3 are PS3 ones and there are 5 in all ....more than the Wii . That said ,I dont know where are you taking your data .PS2 sold 750 000 units in its first week ,more than the PS3 in two months .As such ,the software sold was obviously better but you are seeing to data for the games years later .The attach rate wasnt better that the PS3 .Even one year down since the PS2 launch the total number of games sold was inferior to the consoles sold .The attach ratio with the PS3 is better than that as early as now .The week ending 14 january 2001 the PS2 sold just 32 000 consoles ,comparable to the PS3 number right now . Ninth week for the PS2 saw a 1 650 000 consoles sold cumulative total ,with 77 000 sold for the week .As for the software the attach ratio was nearly 1 and excepting Ridge Racer that approchged 650 000 games sold all the other games were around 250 000 ....for the PS3 the attach ratio is bigger and Gundam and Ridge Racer have already surpassed the 150 000 mark and Resistence 100 000 ...that having sold less than half the consoles of the PS2 by its ninth week is a good sign . PS3 in Japan isnt as expensive and doesnt have a real competition as a next-gen graphics advanced console ,the Wii may sell more or less following its own pattern but the PS3 will fullfill totally that market(next gen graphics ) and it cant go wrong there .
Totally agree, neos and dreamcast are just 360wii fanboys who just wish that ps3 fails, but you know what, it's not gonna happen.

DreamsCast said: It is no secret that PSP has been a massive disappointment. Hardware sales have been good, but software abysmal. Does this set a trend for PS3? Decent hardware sales (mainly for multimedia use) but poor software sales? Tie ratio of less than 1 still in Japan doesn't look promising
Tie ratio just under 2 in Japan according to this site..... Well compare the PSP's entrance into the portable market to XBOX entry into the console market. I do not see how anyone can say the PSP is a major disappointment. Playstation 3 sales will be slow until May or June where we see a major price cut and sales take off. Remember, the PS3 in NA is ahead of the PS2 thus far. To say that the system is dead is a rediculous comment.

Lifetime Sales Prediction - 6/29/2013
Wii U - 38 million
XBOX One - 88 million
Playstation 4 - 145 million

PS3 isn't dead all depends the money that Sony can allow to lose: 1-PS3 is the more expensive console of this generation. Launch price Saturn in US: 399$ (six months later...) Launch price PS1 in US: 299$ ----------------------------------- Launch price PS2 un US: 299$ (one year later) Launch price Gamecube:199$ Launch price Xbox1: 299$ ----------------------------------- Launch Price Xbox 360 (basic system) 299$ (one year later...) Launch price PS3 (basic system) 499$ Launch price Wii 250$ 2-Blu-Ray isn't a suffice 'adds value', reason: Note Gamecube, this system CANNOT read DVD movies and it sells the same units than Xbox1 around the world. 3-Multiplataform titles: According whit this site, Sony is lossing the domiation of software sales whit PS2 (compare PS between PS2). Now the big question is if some people both PS3 and Xbox 360... ¿From which system buy the multiplataform game?, ej:GTA4, EA games, etc..., because the games sems that have the same price. I think that the big bussines now depend of the third partyes (unfortunately for Wii)

Well the DS-fanboys think that if a game doesnt sell 3 million it is a failure ..... First ,show me a third party game that has sold millions on a NIntendo plattform .Even in the DS the only ones I can think of are FFIII (barely ) and Tamagotchi . Nintendo sells millions of their own games in their systems .Other companies struggle ,thats why ultimately they support Sony and not Nintendo . The numbers for RR7 and Gundam in Japan are in this very page ....look for them .RR7 and Gundam have exceeded 150 000 already in Japan and Resistence 100 000 .Resistence in concret has sold between Japan and NA some 428 000 units by 31 dec ,wich is a very good number taking in count it is only out in Japan and NA and only 1.55 million consoles are sold .It will continue to do strong in January and probably february in NA and then you must add the European launch numbers .It will be close to a million .First game ,million seller . Pretending PS3 will flop is a bit ridiculous .Maybe it is having a slow start ,maybe it will need a price drop sooner than expected ,but for sure it will succeed especially in Japan .Its numbers arent the same ones as the PS2 but they cant be ....9 weeks after launch PS2 had 1.6 million sold ...PS3 hasnt shipped even that many consoles .The low sales of the week ending 14 january are normal ,all the plattforms reduced its sales in the same percentage ,even the Wii and the DS ...sales will pick up in february to a stronger pace . Many people wish the PS3 and PSP to dissappear and Sony abandon this business .I dont know what these people have in their mind but the competency has always been good and Sony provides a very good chance of profitability for this industry .These same people usually argue that Playstation has monopoly (as if they knew what a true monopoly is ...Windows anyone ?) but are happy as hell that the DS wipes out the competition and want to do the Wii to do the same ...others prefer the DS to wipe out in handhelds and X360 in consoles .Some would be happy with a MS monopoly and others with a Nintendo monopoly .In any case both would be happy to see the PS3 failing and while they wait for it support each other .It seems as if some would be happy to see the return of the "Seal of Quality " and "Exclusive contracts " times or would like for some odd reason see MS repeating the control over one industry as in the PC and then have it as a monolithic and unsurmontable opponent for any company who wanted to enter the competition ( want to use DirectX ?XNA ?Windows? ...go talk with me about the license and its conditions ...) .....oh well I suppose thats why they are called fanboys .

it's funny to see how people keep believing in his or her's favorite company, and ofcourse one should support it, cause you bought it right? the thing is, be a bit realistic, the time is upon us, IT IS going to change, and nor you, NOR WE, can stop it, go believe it dammit, how foolish can one be. It's the same with microsoft and windows, there will be a day that their monopoly position will be over, it can be this year, next year or in 10 years, but it WILL happen, that's for sure. you guys just keep forgetting that things can change, especially with sony being even more stupid than jessica simpson, and ignorant like a little child. I mean, come on, they act like they are wanting to lose, like they never heared of marketing whatsoever. Ps3 will not be first, period! maybe your minds will clear when you listen to the bitter sweet symphony, and then you can bring constructive arguments instead of this fanboyish talk. Sony has the same destiny as Sega. EDIT: once again the above poster is too stupid to think why sony is doing harm to the industry, learn to think before you post such a thing

I will remember you this when it is first . X360 sells the same as Xbox 1 ,even worse in some markets .Playstation 3 even doing it horribly wrong(launch price ,software drought ) is selling more than X360 last year and only in 2 markets when X360 was in 3, X360 arrived at 4.5 in end September and PS3 will do it in march or april ...what is what you dont understand ? . Playstation 3 may have to lower the price sooner than expected ,but to think it will sink into the ocean and let the others be the number one console is wishful thinking .I heard the same things about PS2 some years before .....Dreamcast was cheaper ,the multiplattform looked better on Dreamcast (DOA2...Tekken Tag vs Soul Calibur ,Quake III ..),DVD was innecesary for a home console ,software sales for the PS2 were lacking for the first 8-9 months ,it was difficult to program ,it wasnt as powerful as expected ,Xbox and Cube were going to wipe it out with their superior specs and exclusives .... And PS2 is the only console I dont own from the prior generation ;I have several Dreamcasts ,the Cube and the Xbox .But this time the better console(after my Pov) is the PS3 and thats the one I will be getting ...the others maybe but later when the price drops . I am not saying the PS3 cant fail ...of course it can .But pretending it will fail because it sells more than the X360 last year ,because Japan have had shortages for the first two months and because the key software is being delayed 2 months is a bit delusional .

you are forgetting that other companies can do pricedrops aswell, and atleast MS and Nintendo have knowledge about Marketing infact, the Wii will drop to $200 in march, also providing different colors, right, now your turn again. oh and one thing i would like to add; Giant enemy crab. *grabs his anti-flame shield*
