Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo really needs to be more ambitious with NX titles

2004-2006 still had many great games for the GC. Twilight Princess, Paper Mario TTYD, Resident Evil 4 and Fire Emblem just to name a few.

Twilight Princess was promoted and released primarily as a Wii title only coming out on GameCube afterwards, selling far fewer units. Paper Mario and Fire Emblem have their fans, but one is a spinoff and the other is a minor title. Resident Evil 4 was not even developed by Nintendo, it was a Capcom game.

GameCube's support from Nintendo was bare bones, Nintendo was primarily interested in preparing for the Wii at this time. While GameCube has its fans, it was more or less a stop-gap console between N64 and Wii. That's why there weren't any killer apps released for it.

I put RE4 because Nintendo were the ones that struck the deal with Capcom to get it.

I also disagree about no killer apps. Just because you dont like them, doesnt mean they werent there.

Not being fondly remember as another title doesn't mean it's not remembered as a good game, the argument you're pushing here is it's not as fondly remembered as much as one of the other best games in history so it's a problem. It's like saying Deus Ex MD will not be as fondly remembered as the original like it's a problem when the game in question is stilla really good game being compared to one of history's greats.

Games like Galaxy only come once in a while it's one of the few games with a rating that matches OOT, your argument would be like complaining that Ronaldo is not as good as Pele in this instance as like 3DW or not I can't really think of a better 3D platformer this gen tbh.

Mainline Mario games are typically considered masterpieces, so for ones like Sunshine and 3D World not to be, they are sub-par by series standards.

That's kinda giving Sunshine and 3D World the short end of the stick. Yeah they're not 64 or the Galaxy games, but it doesn't mean we should forget about them or think they shouldn't be mentioned in the series that has masterpieces. It's like saying Skyward Sword doesn't deserve to be mentioned among the likes of OoT or WW. Despite not being what some fans want, in the end, what they are, they are great games. It's almost like saying Uncharted 4 doesn't deserve to be considered a masterpiece or mentioned in the same light as 2 or 3 just because it didn't really stand out to a greater extent compared to its predecessors with the exception of graphics, even though it appears to have great execution (granted I've not played the game so idk how fans feel about this particular game). If someone were to ask me what they should try out for 3D Mario, I wouldn't mind mentioning 3D World. Yes, it's not 64 or Galaxy, but it's not supposed to be nor should it have to be. 3D World is its own game and it's a damn good one at that. I'm excited where 3D Mario can go next, but I don't think 3D World nor Sunshine should be put in the back burner just because they're not what some fans want them to be.

3D World is an enjoyable and polished game, but in a series full of classics, it isn't one. It will not be remembered as one in the way that Mario Bros, Mario Bros 3, Mario World, Mario 64, and Mario Galaxy are. It's not a bad game, but it does not live up to the legacy of its series.

In a weird way I think if you had shown me Super Mario 3D World in 1996, I would've liked it a lot more than Super Mario 64 intially.

Mario 64 initially kinda "shocked" me a little because it didn't feel like a Mario game. Mario 3D World feels like a "3D Mario" game or how I would've expected it to play. It's fast and snappy too.

But I grew in time to appreciate the scope/scale of Mario 64 too so now I wouldn't mind something in that vein again.

It's not only 3DS end of lifetime titles. It's Wii U's entire lifetime. Is 3DS games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2 or even A Link Between Worlds. All of them are good games, maybe even great. But in one way or another, they lack ambition. They fail to deilver the same quality that Nintendo offered with the same IPs on the past. And by the way, 3DS is not even close to what the DS had to offer.

Mario Kart 7 and 3D Land were bad ass in my opinion.  NSMB2 was a joke due to insane amount of coins you are bombarded with but had a few difficult stages (not many).

I won't keep trying to argue that. But I find really weird that someone can praise MK7 and Super Mario 3D Land after what we saw in Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. And no, I'm not talking about graphics.

That's not entirely true. Sure, they have an strong affinity to side scrolling games. But we have never experienced a situation as bad as this one. Last gen we had not one but two big 3D Mario titles. Last gen we had not one but two  home console Zelda games (kinda). Last gen we had not one but three new Metroid titles + the Prime Collection. Last gen we had not one but two brand new handheld Zelda games.  Last gen we experienced the creation of new IPs such as Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, The Last Story, Hotel Dusk... IPs that don't sell that well but still, they invest money and efforts on them. Last gen we got old franchises like Golden Sun, Donkey Kong Country, Punch Out or Sin and Punishment revived.

I'm not asking Nintendo for Skyrim or GTA games. I'm asking Nintendo to do their best as they did in the past instead off making zero efforts like they are doind now.

Its because the WiiU sold like shit. If the NX does well, then we probably will get multiple games in certain franchises and Nintendo might take more chances. Thats just the sad truth of it.

But if Nintendo does not get more ambitious and take more chances with its games, the NX won t sell well-  just like the Wii U

Well if ambition is the problem, then they can fix that. Would be worse if people are getting tired of their franchises.

Actually, if you look at 3D World's credits, you'll see that it had a much higher budget and larger dev team than any of the other 3D Mario's, just because of HD. The 3D World formula was deliberately chosen, to support multiplayer. Wouldn't it be seen as a huge step back if the next 3D Mario DIDN'T support multiplayer?

And speaking of ambition, sometimes it can come back and bite you. Sonic Unleashed for the PS3 was the most ambitious title for the blue hedgehog, boasting a brand new engine with advanced lighting. The levels and hubs were MASSIVE for a Sonic game. The soundtrack was sublime. But the system struggled to handle it all with sluggish framerates, bloated and confusing hubs, and needless Werehog/collectathon sections to pad the game out. They even had to tone things BACK for Generations just so it can run well.

I agree with this. They better not cut corners with the next 3D Mario game! >:(

Considering the success they've been finding with HD remasters of the Zelda series I'm very shocked there hasn't been a Mario64 HD or Mario Sunshine HD, I would wager that they'll have a HD remaster of an old title before we see a Mario NX title.

As for the OP I sort of see what you mean, when it comes to new IPs the biggest console for Nintendo was probably the Gamecube or well... new directions with the IPs at least, I guess for the NX it's just a case of play the waiting game until Nintendo decides we are worthy of finding out what the console is even... less than 6 months away and I've no idea if I should be making space alongside my PS4 or my Vita/3DS, hype has turned to bored of lacking info for me 100%.

Yeah, that's a bit surprising. A Mario 64 HD remake that has all the extra content of the DS version would sell very well.
