So, you are in the "we all are competing" camp? |
Well, that's what capitalism is: competition.

Umm. You appear positive on the outside, but what drives you to work hard? Are you sure there aren't negative feelings driving you? Fear of rejection for example or maybe a need to be accepted and liked. Those types of feelings are embeded deep. |
Yeah, I'm not always optimistic, though I feel for me, those negative feelings kinda slow me down, like they discourage me rather than encourage, while optimism keeps me fighting.

What does it mean to be successful? Is it the pursuit of material wealth? Is it the pursuit of happiness? What is happiness? Does this happiness contribute to our purpose in life? What is our purpose in life?
These are some of the questions that keep me up at night.

Optimism within negative feelings. Happyception.

Happiness is no longer worrying about your purpose in life or being succesful. Enjoying the moment, not having any questions keeping you up at night. Clear conscience, clear mind, no stress. It's not the most productive state of mind. Carpe diem, manjana, hakuna matata.
I don't exactly put much stock in psychology ...
I could make an easy refutation like this, "optimistic stock investors are more likely to take risks and reap more gains compared to pessimistic ones" therefore making OP's point bunk ...

Thanks but I'm not being kept up at night out of worry, but rather the joy in thinking about and trying to understand the world. Afterall, in my view, there is joy to be had in personal growth.

Makes you noncommittal.
I am a lazy pessimist. Am I the only procrastinating pessimist out there?
