Forums - Sony Discussion - Selected PlayStation 4 Games Getting Free VR Upgrade

There’s a selection of PlayStation 4 videogame titles that are set to receive virtual reality (VR) support upon the launch of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) later this year. Until this point, it was suspected that some of these titles might require an additional purchase or paid ‘upgrade’ for PlayStation VR compatibility, however it’s now been confirmed that at least a handful will be offered to existing owners as a free download.

Hustle Kings VR, Super Stardust Ultra VR and Bound are all set to receive PlayStation VR support at launch. Previously, only the latter of these three titles had been confirmed as receiving a compatibility update for free, and given that both the original PlayStation 4 versions of Hustle Kings and Super Stardust Ultra launched some time ago you’d be forgiven for thinking that they’d required additional financial investment on behalf of the player to receive an update. A recent update to the PlayStation Store, however, suggests otherwise, offering brand new purchases at full price and free updates for existing owners.

Conversely, DriveClub VR is set to be launched as a brand new title with new tracks made available for the existing non-VR videogame. Star Wars: Battlefront is set to receive a PlayStation VR add-on free-of-charge, while both Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Final Fantasy XV will receive their VR supported experiences alongside the launch of the parent videogame.

There’s a mixed approach to distributing content for PlayStation VR, it seems. Electronic Arts (EA) and Square Enix appear keen to jump in but are less sure of their potential audience. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is aiming to ensure early adopters have plenty of content available day one, but are reserving their biggest franchises for premium experiences.

Nice move. I have a few of those games already.

Good move. It would be pretty douchey to charge people extra to play using vr after they've already bought the game and the headset.

If it's the same game, just with added VR support then I agree, but if the devs have developed new content specifically for VR then I don't think it's unreasonable for that content to be paid.

They keep giving me more and more reasons to actually keep my pre-order.

Agreed. That's why I'm pleasantly surprised to see Super Stardust Ultra VR being a free upgrade.

It seems like a whole new experience.

Weird that they didnt mention Volume getting a free sizable VR expansion with Coda.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Nice thing.
I know it won't happen but imagine how epic Bloodborne would be in VR. :)

Cool, always nice to get free stuff, particularly after paying £350 for something.

I do hope they also release some of the VR stuff separately as well, like the Battlefront mission, I don't really want to have to buy Battlefront just for that mission. I will, I don't want to, but I will lol.
