superchunk said: Why do people keep saying they are different audiences? That is just silly. How many gamers do you know that don't own a smartphone? Fact is, Sony will want a ton of free advertising from the various media outlets in the world. Each of these media outlets only have so much time / space they are going to put towards tech news. Which one is the average JoeBob going to see at primetime on 9/7 and 9/8? The iPhone 7. Due to Apple's event, the only 'market' that will even know that there is a new PS4 will be those that already know one is coming. However, had Apple's event been during a different month, it likely would have lead all mass media tech news for those couple days. I think that is big. |
It's funny how clueless people are on this site. This is huge news that is surely upsetting Sony. I would change the date personally if I were Sony.
The PS4 does not have 40+ million sales and rising because of TRUE/Hardcore gamers. There is nowhere near that many out there. They need the public exposure.
If Apple didn't have their event, maybe the late night shows like Kimmel or Fallen have a bit/special or something about the PS4 Neo. Play a game, do VR, whatever. Every tech website would have its main page with a giant PS4 Neo article or three.
Now instead the late nights will be all about apple, the tech sites all about apple, ect. Apple brings way more clicks than any other company, especially in regards to a new phone. ANything Sony does (which won't be amazing, its not like its a ps5) will be basically back page news on any site and most likely won't get mentioned on talk shows or news.
Yes, will us gamers know what Sony showed. But who cares. Us gamers are a small majority. We won't push the Neo sales to the heights Sony woudl want. They need the general public. And Apple is going to steal tehy unveiling basically. I can see this turning into a Wii U debacle. You know, the general public not realizing the Neo is a new console and just assuming its just a ps4. Like the Wii U was thought to just be a Wii attachment.
