Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is it still acceptable to consider The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past an all-time great?

Is it still acceptable?

No, gaming needs to move forward. 14 9.86%

No, graphics are bad. 6 4.23%

Yes, but I am gay, so... 27 19.01%

I think the terrible graphics and low content trump anything else. It's a joke, really, for a full price game.

I don't find any fault with a guy being the hero and a girl being the victim. I just found the game boring, personally. I don't know why, either. I plowed through Link's Awakening and both Oracle games, so it's not top-down issues. I guess... I dunno. It just bores me.

TL DR, So it's satire. OK

You have to bear in mind that, just like Warner Bros said, this videogame was a product of its time, where the sexism was commonplace in the gaming culture. It was wrong then and it is wrong now, but no point trying to erase the past, but instead learn from it to make a better future.

Is this memes?

And here I am considering God of War the pinacle of Hack and Slash games. Which is a game so sexist and brutal it deserves an all time low on the greatness ladder. Litteraly every woman in that game will deceive you or needs you. And let's not mention the sex minigames. So that makes people like me which like god of war sexist, womenhating, objectifying, sociopaths. A link to the past helped shape the future of other Zelda games and gaming as a media in general, for that alone it's an all time great.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

No I think gaming needs to move forward beyond the shallow and sexist depictions such as this. An all time great that's still relevant in our world today is Leisure Suit Larry, a much better and less controversial pick than Link to the Past.

It's aged incredibly well. The bright crisp 16 bit graphics put many modern indies to shame and have only improved with age. The gameplay for the most part is solid and well executed. The controls and the feel of slashing the sward and interacting physically with the world is almost spot on.

But there are issues that were apparent even back then and, in terms of world creation, characters, atmosphere and plot, link's awakening was actually a huge improvement.

I normally end up feeling like the grinch when it comes to talking about alttp. It's far from my favourite Zelda. But it's still a great game in it's own way and there's easily enough reasons for a fan to consider it the best game ever. I bet very few of my favourite games will end up ageing as well.

This reminds me of this shortversion of Lord of the Rings.
Translation from Swedish:
1st panel:
Frodo gets an assignment.
DESTROY!

2nd panel:
They walk for a while and then split up.
We who are big do the easy stuff and you small people do all the dangerous stuff

3rd panel:
A lot of people ride back and forth
4th panel:
The ring is destroyed
Frodo goes back home
NICE!
