Forums - Movies & TV - Star Trek Beyond deserved so much more at the box office

I liked the movie a lot although I don't understand what was SO BAD about the trailer. That trailer actually made want to see it.

My question. Please no hate. Was there a homosexual relationship with Sulu in the movie?

A brief nod early in the movie. Very casual.

It really did deserve better. I guess a combination of miscommunication and feeling like a middling entry lacking the gravity of previous ones did it in.

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly but that first trailer was terrible. Didn't do any favors to the film. I think the first impression from it contributed to it's box office numbers. It's shame because Beyond was good film. It really felt like a Star Trek film and Karl Urban was stellar.

I love Fast and Furious but did not fit in with Star Trek Universe

Yes.

You see him meet his husband in a brief scene in the movie.

Well the first one was an exciting reboot with real Spock, and then the last one was about one of the most well known villains of all time.
But they should have realized this would not be as big and kept the budget at 150 million.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. I also don't think Star Trek fans are into Fast & Furious. The recent ones have been heading further and further into silly Bollywood action and I'm pretty sure if Paul Walker hadn't died the movie would have probably only made half the money.

I'll give you an example. They're making a Transformers movie. And the trailer is filled with OP, Wheeljack, Bumblebee, Rachet etc. all sitting at a table, drinking tea. And that's all you see. That's basically what they did with Beyonds trailer. They made the trailer as another type of movie. Star Trek is Star Trek. Not Fast Furious. I'm not going to like a Fast trailer. Regardless that I like the FF franchise.

Also, the second film was hated. So that's another reason people wouldn't watch the third one.

Agreed. Into Darkness hurt this film. Into Darkness was more of a Sci Fi Action film than a Trek film. That combined with stupidity of taking elements of Wrath of Khan didn't help. When the Beyond trailer released it looked they were doing another action film, so it turned off a lot of fans. It's ashame because Beyond was a Trek film and a good one at that.

Like the most recent Bourne movie, as a movie, it was a blast. Arguably even the best in both series, but it just felt a bit out of place in the universe established by previous movies.

I enoyed it very much. I consider this and Thr first movie a tie in. I don't care for the 2nd one bit.

I saw the movie very late btw,  just last week in fact. The trailers put me right off especially that rubbish rihanna one.
