The cost reduction enabled by the availability of 16nm lithography could be used in two ways, either shrink the existing design and pass the savings onto the consumer (PS4 slim model), or keep the price the same and add value (XB1 Slim and PS4 Neo).

Sony has to make pricing room for the Neo, if Neo is to be $399 (obvious price point) then PS4 can't be $349. So they've used 16nm to cut costs of the PS4 Slim, and add features (power) to the PS4 Neo. I wouldn't be surprised to see PS4 Slim at $249 and Neo at $399.

MS isn't anywhere near ready to release Scorpio, so they've bet on enticing existing users to upgrade by using the cost reduction to add value to the XB1 Slim by adding 4K Blu-ray support. Overall, both are valid strategies that will help differentiate the PS4 and XB1 from each other and potentially improve the sales of both. PS4 Slim becomes the cheap HD console, XB1 Slim becomes the media console and PS4 Neo becomes the power console until Scorpio arrives late next year.

Yes they both sound like valid strategies. But only if MS exists in a vacuum.

The route mS took, Add value to a cost reduced XB1 and sell it at $299 has its own issues.

So I want a 4k console. Something that allows me play games, watch contemt and Blu-rays all in 4k and HDR. I can either pay $299 and at least get some of that. The movies and HDR part or I can pay $100 extra and get all of it.

So I don't want a 4k console. I don't have a 4k tv nor am I planning on getting one anytime soon. I just wanna play my games in good ol fashioned 1080p. The best and cheapest console to do that just happens to be the PS4. It's either hat or I pay more for things I don't even need or won't use.

I really think MS should have gone the full on cost reduction route.  Undercut the hell out of the PS4 in price. come in at $199 or even $169. That would have been a way more competitive approach than what they are doing now.

I think MS still hasn't learnt their lesson.

With the OG PS4/XB1; sony's message was clear. This is a gaming console pure and simple without any added bells and whistles and will cost you $399. MS went with kinect and TV and ended up with a bloated gaming console that cost $499 and they haven't recovered since.

Now it's happening again. There is the XB1s and the PS4s. One is a "gaming" console that supports HDR and 4k movies/content. And costs $299. The other is just the same old gaming console and will most likely cost $249....

And i think MS is making a mistake again. Price is key, the people that care about 4k content and UHD Blu-ray aren't "budget" minded. Those are the same people willing to spend $399/$499 for a new or scorpio to go along with their new 4k TVs. And their numbers are nothing g compared to the people still on 1080p TV and on a budget.

And by the time those 1080p folks are looking to upgrade to 4k, things like the Neo would probably cost less than $299.

So for me, it's all about the pricing and knowing your market. If MS had just made a smaller XB1 without all the blls and whistles and priced it at $199 to sonys $249.... then they would have had a fighting chance.

I agree. If the new PS4 can undercut Xbone S then it will be a no contest. Infact I think Microsoft needs at least 50$ advantage instead.

Sony wants to extend this gen , Microsoft wants to end gens

Errrr...

they are both doing the same thing. They are both trying to extend the gen so much that there literally will no longer be gens.

Yep, I'm expecting Sony to still have 'generations' with one or two mid gen models in between while MS will just keep updating. It's exactly the same except the naming of the consoles, Sony will define their generation when they release the PS5 and 6 (with mid gen consoles in between) while MS will name their consoles like they're upgrades (Scorpio v1, Scorpio v2 etc). The thing is when Sony release the PS5, any Xbox console released within that time frame will be considered 9th gen along with the PS5.

They all will have generations based on names. But there won't be much of a generation in the same way that an iPhone 6 isn't that much different from an iPhone 5.

As long as we have the same games across PS5/PS4neo/PS4 and XB2/XB1scorpio/XB1 then generations domt exist.

I don't think we won't have generations period. I believe at some point game support for the PS4 og will be dropped. But the tradition would be handled differently. Something like this.

PS4 2013 ------> PS4s 2016

PS4s + PS4n 2016 -----> PS5 2020

PS4s + PS4n+ PS5 2020 ----> PS5n 2023 ( it's at this point I expect support for PS4s to be dropped. Ganes coming out after 2023 will not have to have a PS4s mode/support. PS4n will still have support.

Hold on to your breeches. Sony will keep on making Playstation generational consoles.

Here is a PS9 commercial from the future.

both strategys where the correct ones for each company as each is in a diferent situation.

MS cant wait a whole year with the neo out having an outdated console, so the one s had to have some litle improvement just to hold on a bit until the scorpio can fend of the neo.

while sony cant upgrade the base model since it will release with the neo, so it was best to make it aas cheap as possible, then it will have a premium and base model that will appeal to a broader audience combined and not fight itself..

But the Xbox One S will do jack shit against the Neo. It'll have its work cut out against a PS4 Slim priced at $300, maybe $250.

The one s will be between the ps4s and ps4n. While I dont belive it will matter as gaming performance it will be below the ps4s. It will get crushed by both anyways. But a regular one s at $200 with nothing extra will really sell next to nothing next to a $250 ps4s. At thouse low prices, everyone will just pick the stronger one.
