Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Today is the Super Nintendo's 25th birthday (in N. America).

The SNES just may be my most favorite console as well. I have so many fond memories of it. Like you, I was blown away when I 1st saw Mario World and I immediately wanted to play. Some of my all time favorite games are on the system as well, such as Mega Man X, Super Mario RPG, Turtles in Time, Chrono Trigger, Tetris Attack, Kirby Super Star, and more. Even now, I have an SNES and Super Famicom ready to be played. If I had to stick with one, it would probably be the SNES too.

Well then maybe someone can tell me why it became gray and purple in the US? I've always wondered.

I think it was made to look cooler? I think I recall hearing NoA wasn't found of the colorful presentation of the SF. They thought it looked too child-like.

My favorite console. Back when RPGs and platformers reigned supreme.

They must have felt strongly about it, because in the process they had to sacrifice part of the SNES logo:

The four colors, representing the colors on the buttons. It was similar to Playstation's iconic X, O, Triangle and Square logo. It was on all the consoles, controllers and game boxarts all around the world, except in the US.

Guess it wouldn't look good if it was in blue/purple only, so I guess they decided to go without it.

That did make me kinda sad. I did like that logo. The colored buttons are pretty great too.

Great system! NoA made sure it was an awful looking system though, the PAL/SFC version looks a lot better.

SNES was released a year later in Europe, I didnt buy one myself but my brother did a few years later (around 94 or so I believe). The NES reigned supreme until about then in our house.

Guess they thought it wouldn't look good if it was in blue/purple only, so I suppose they decided to go without it. Still a bit surprising that they favored making it "look cooler" if it involved removing that iconic symbol.

Gonna see if I can find an article explaining this.

Technically the circle logo portion was still used by the US (modified). But it was as a background element on the SNES game boxes.

I still remember seeing it in the store. Playing with my friends. From there it turned into a serious addiction.

I wish they had done a SNES mini instead of the NES one.
30+ SNES games on a small cute 59$ SNES console would be awesome.

Congrats, never played on it, but have played games released on that console
