Forums - Sony Discussion - New PS4 Slim Controller (video)

I've just skimmed through the GAF thread on this and have to say there are some pretty stupid people over there. Lot's of people are complaining that Sony hasn't removed the light bar. Have they spent the last three years with their heads buried in the sand? I don't understand how you can be this ignorant three years into the lifecycle of the PS4.

Yes, ridiculous that Sony doesn't give people the option to disable the light. They should accept that and deal with it, nobody wants options.

Also calling other people dumb on GAF is rich when you are that active on a forum that also has many dumb people - especially considering that some people are also active on GAF.

Well, let's see if they allow people to actually turn off the light now completely. It seems unnecessary to many users to have it at all and it recudes battery life by a good amount for a controller that doesn't have a huge battery to begin with.

Who said anything about them asking for an option to turn the light off? They were saying Sony should remove it from the controller. It's just finding yet another thing to complain about while similtaniously making yourself look stupid doing it.

But let's face it, you know exacly what I typed and meant there but wanted to just change the point I was making to create friction. I won't be answering your reply.

Actually, that little LED light takes up almost no energy at all. Even if they removed it, you would only see a 10% increase in battery life.

The only thing they can do is put in a bigger mAh battery in. Until that happens we will be stuck with 6 - 7 hour battery life.

Point *ONE*.

People which are using it on PC are able to turn it completely off, even more benefitting the battery life of the controller.

With my PS4 the controller lasts about 4-6 hours. When using on my PC with bluetooth, it lasts as much as 10-12 hours with the light bar switched off completely.

There is an option to do this in the settings of both pieces of software and is relatively simple to do.

Obviously not applicable for those that play wired.

Not sure how he is testing that, because the DS4 only contains (1) small LED and it is only capable of pulling 20mAh. So the light would last 50 hours fully lit all by itself. In a 4 - 6 hour period it could only use 80 - 120mAh of 1000mAh.

You can see that the DS4 lightbar at full uses almost exactly 20mAh by watching the test in this link:

http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps4/DS4_Mods

In the link he tests it once with the light on and once with it off. The DS4 contains a 1000mAh battery that lasts 9 Hours and 30 Minutes with the light bar on. With the light bar off the battery last 11 Hours and 20 Minutes. A roughly 20% increase in battery life, reaffirming the ~20mAh of the LED.

So as I said before, if you went from the current 'dim' setting on the DS4 to no LED at all, you would get about a 10% increase in battery life. They can take the light away, but it is only going to give you a little over an hour more life. If they want to increase controller life, they have to put in a bigger battery. a 2400mAh battery would give you about 15 - 20 hours of random gameplay and video watching, which should be more than enough to make it through a full day of gaming with a re-charge each night (Unless you are doing a marathon, then that is well beyond normal use, and there ain't no way they will do that for the few that would ever utilize it).

So you think that a 2 hour increase is not worth it to let people disable the light at all? Even 10% is better than nothing, isn't it?

They don't have to take it away - they just have to put in the option to disable it completely for those who don't have any interest in it and the products which are supposed to make use of it.

Its crazy that the light bare makes such a big differnce.

9hours 30mins or so with lightbar at dim, no rumble, low sound on controller.
12hours 30mins or so without lightbar on at all, everything else the same.

Seriously if its possible on the PC to turn it off, why the hell wouldnt Sony make a option like that for the PS4 as well?

whats even more crazy is that people that use rumble, high sound on controller, and max brightness on the lightbar, only have like 6hours with the controller.

Turning that stuff down/off, and you can double its battery life.

Between dim and off is only an hour difference. I see no reason for Sony to make a change from what they already offer. The light identifies that the controller is on, and keeps track of who's who.

I feel like if people need to game for longer than 5 hours minimum in a sitting they have plenty of options. Plug the controller in, swap out the battery for a larger 2000mAh battery ($15), or buy a second controller. I have a USB cable next to me in bed or at the couch for my Vita anyways, so I never have a problem during the rare occasion when I have a solid 5+ hours to play, and I always keep my controller either on the USB charger or the charging dock when not in use.

Well, there appears to be no signs of an increased battery life, which doesn't necessarily mean it's true, because after all, this slim console and dualshock 4 revision haven't even been officially announced, but if they truly did leave the PS4 battery the same, then there are two conclusions we can draw here

1. sony don't give a fuck
2. the neo controller will have the better battery life and this dualshock 4 revision didnmt get a battery upgraded due to the goal of releasing as cheap a console as possible
