This is a global event for the international audience, not something for the game industry alone. Mario is recoginized everywhere in the world, Sony doesn't have a character like that.

Yup, the Nintendo Land section of Universal in Osaka is going to open in 2020 right in time for the Olympics. It's probably what kinda pushed Nintendo to get the deal done in time.

Agreed, I think only side characters can work in a movie, for example I'd be really interested in a Yoshi movie where Mario doesn't appear and where Yoshi can't talk (not even saying "Yoshi")

Personally, I think a Luigi Mansion movie is the easiest one to write and enjoy. It may even do better than the recent Ghostbuster movie too.
