Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: We Don't Discriminate Between AAA or Indie

Sony often gets criticised for paying too much attention to so-called "smaller" games, but speaking at Gamescom 2016, likeable PlayStation exec Jim Ryan has said that the platform holder primarily cares about great titles – regardless of whether they're made by massive studios or minuscule ones.

Asked if the company finds it hard to balance the different types of titles, here's what he had to say: "At the end of the day, it's just about great games. We don't discriminate between something that's a AAA or something that's an indie. If something's a great game, then it gets focus, attention, and love."

Ryan pointed to the company's commitment to No Man's Sky as an example, outlining how the platform holder has invested just as much into that game as it would one of its own major blockbuster releases. We reckon that this is the right attitude for the record – great games should always come first, irrespective of who's making them.

No one discriminates between AAA or indie, as far as I'm concerned. Particulary when the later is a word that has lost most if not all its meaning at this point.

And that's why they got titles like rocket league and no man's sky first on console. this policy definitely paid off.

I used to write off Indies.

And then I played Salt & Sanctuary.

As a result, Sony has more indies on its platform. A wide selection of games is always good for the gamer.

I think this comments explains why Sony haven't been wearing Indie T-shirts or presenting Indie games as something 'different'. Rushy from Evolution said publically that there should be no such thing as 'Indie' and everything should just be seen as a game. Sony's policy has made the PS4 the go to console for new experiences and taking creative risks has always been the reason for their success.

I do

But can you give a definition of "indie" at this point that isn't contradicted by any example? Because we're beyond a point on which that's impossible.
