Forums - General Discussion - Do you buy manga new or used? A famous manga author's stance on the matter.

Do you buy manga new or used?

I buy my manga mostly new 18 90.00%

I buy my manga mostly used 2 10.00%

Total:20

I usually just check out manga from a library...last manga I bought was the first 3 volumes of Yugioh 5d's and the first Naruto book

Hahaha, that is soo true in Japan. Way too often did I see this while my time in Japan, and it's soo easy. There's just so much used manga available to read. If it's a problem for manga artists, it'll be a hard battle to win. It's just too easy to get manga used in Japan, and cheap too

Indeed it's very easy.

Even in rental stores you can see people standing in front of a shelf for several hours reading a full series for free.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing to see many people do it, but also kinda sad. I wish they would just buy the manga new. Though they're probably just passing the time or something.

My stance is that considering the amount of manga that is out there, the industry is quite healthy no matter how it is consumed. Same goes for anime and games.

That said, I never buy used.

While the industry the industry could be considered healthy (if you consider quietly dying healthy), authors are not. Most published authors are either starving and/or working part time on another job. The few that have the chance of having running series would have an ok-ish income if it wasn't for needing to hire multiple assistant to keep up with the deadlines while still working 8-10 hours per day 7 days a week.

Edit : On a personal note I only buy mangas new (but I don't buy a lot of them, and only in my native language), same goes for figures (if they are still available new).

Used goods market is never the issue.
Consumer side manga market synthetised in a closed loops would look like this ->
If you consider 3 consumers :
- "A" allocates 10k yen to "new" mangas. x percent goes to the author, let's say 10 percent, so 1k yen.
- "B" allocates 10k yen to "new" mangas. 1k yen for the author.
- "C" buys "B"'s mangas for 6k. 0 yen goes to the author.
- "B" use what's left of "C"'s budget (So B - store fee) on "new" mangas.
In this case the author gets money from both B and C, despite C not directly buying "new" mangas. He gets less because the store fees are taken twice on his budget, but there are twice as many customers that consumed the product and will participate in word of mouth.

I would consider an industry where people starve by their own volition just to be able to produce content as very healthy. Mangakas are not Foxconn employees that have no other outs.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I've got quite a few new ones, but they're getting a bit too expensive in the long run. I just want to finish my DragonBall collection and mostly buy used now to fill the gaps.

An industry based on hyperconsommation with fans devoting their wallets to inked icons that systemized the popular belief in which living the dream comes before ones health is definitely not ok. Also giving up is for wuss why would they do that.

I don't buy manga often anyways, but I would buy them new, since it would be more of a collector thing and you can't clean the pages if they are dirty :/
