Famous manga author pleads with fans to buy their comics new and at full price

Creator of Gantz sounds off about the difficulties posed by Japan’s used manga market.

On the release day of most general audience manga, you can walk into just about any bookstore in Japan and pick up a brand-new copy. But while that’s the most direct way for fans to consume content, it’s far from the only one. (...)

For consumers, having so many different avenues by which to read manga helps them strike the balances they want between price, speed of availability, and ownership. But in a recent tweet, Hiroya Oku, writer and artist of manga including Gantz and Hen, asserts that the wealth of options can severely hurt manga creators’ bottom line.

“This might shatter some kids’ illusions, but no manga creators can keep producing comics if people are just going to read through them at the store without buying them, or buy them from Yahoo! Auctions or used book stores. Creators just can’t do it. But there are so many adults who get their manga that way, even though they know the situation. If you want to support a manga creator, please buy your manga new, at list price, as often as you can.”

That's actually a compelling argument!

I don't buy them at all. But. 2nd hand exists for a reason... Either someone is being thrifty and has other priorities... Or they cannot afford the brand new price.

If they don't like people buying second hand, then they need to pull their finger out instead of complaining and give incentives for people to drop their cash and buy it brand new, it's capitalism at work.

I like to support the mangas I like, so I buy brand new (just bought some online). I also don't like used books in general (messed up pages, etc).

I only buy Junji Ito manga graphic novels, always the hard cover deluxe edition of every single history. Missing in my collection is Tomie, but I shall have it someday =)

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

This shouldn't be a shock to anyone really? I mean if you buy something used the only one you are supporting is the outlet where you are buying it, be it a used car, used game or used book.

To counter this people should create items which buyers want to retain and keep on their shelves, either by ways of creating beautiful art or else making something that the owner will want to cherish and not just sell on again after reading it or want to donate it to Charity because it is rubbish.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

My stance is that considering the amount of manga that is out there, the industry is quite healthy no matter how it is consumed. Same goes for anime and games.

That said, I never buy used.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Ive only bought 2 mangas in my life and both new, i normally never buy anything used since... well you never know what people may have done with those things.

Hahaha, that is soo true in Japan. Way too often did I see this while my time in Japan, and it's soo easy. There's just so much used manga available to read. If it's a problem for manga artists, it'll be a hard battle to win. It's just too easy to get manga used in Japan, and cheap too.

As for me, I get manga new, as I can't really ever find it used. There's some at good will or other used books stores, so that is rare for me. Plus, I don't really like used material. They could be really dirty : S
