Forums - Gaming Discussion - I avoid buying games on release, here are my reasons

I've never ordered a game that was broken or bad when I got it. Maybe I tend to buy from companies with better quality control?

Nintendo, GameFreak, HAL, Atlus, Naughty Dog and SCEJ tend to all have pretty good track records. So I never worry when pre-ordering from them

Preorders and day-one purchases should, imo, be treated like Kickstarter backing. You are purchasing without proof of quality of the product (or limited proof if reviews are on time), so it should be based on earned trust. You gain little to nothing from this practice so it should be a reward for publishers who have earned it. Have the publisher's previous games delivered? Are their games up to your technical standards at launch? Those are the questions you should ask. If people would just do that, we would probably see a lot of things change in this industry. Shoot, Ubisoft and WB might start behaving themselves for a change.

That's why I honestly can buy games from Capcom ( Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney ), Atlus ( Megaten series ), HAL (Kirby, SSB), EDA ( Zelda, Mario ), Monolith Soft ( Xeno series ) without worrying myself too much, 'cause they earned my trust with great quality games already :)

Exactly.  Same reason I am fine buy Bethesda games day one.  While I know not everyone has had the same experience I have, for me they have always delivered.  On PC anyway.  But another company I love but will never preorder or buy day 1 is Creative Assembly.  I love Total War but after my preorder of Rome Total War 2 bit me in the butt they are off my list essentially forever unless they do something amazing to win it back.  I'll still buy their games, but not day 1 and certainly no preorder.

Waiting and paying less is the smart thing to do, games get reduced within months. I just have no ability to wait. I'm always late for everything so I don't have to wait around. Waiting sucks and I'll gladly pay extra to not go through waiting.
Did I say I hate waiting?

This is more with regards to pre-ordering, but the main reason to avoid buying a game on release day is quality issues. Essentially, you are buying something before anyone has the chance to review it, which is a leap of faith.

The only tangible reason for pre-ordering is for the "bonus" content, which is typically not worth gambling on a potentially mediocre or flawed release.

On the flip side of that, the real reason for pre-ordering is in support of a developer or franchise you have a high degree of faith in as pre-orders can effect the release of a game with regards to its success. Positive pre-order data does actually help developers.

As a consumer, the general reason for buying on release is in response to a long anticipated release that the player wishes to experience along with all the others who were waiting and wish to immediately express their opinions on said release.

Personally, I have bought far too many games on release day that ended up in the backlog that would have been better purchased later for less or not even at all and believe that the best policy is to buy what you plan to consume immediately.

I never buy games day 1 either, mainly for the reasons OP listed... don't want to pay full price and can usually get the game cheaper after a few weeks, and just to make sure the early hype and previews a game gets actually stack up for the final product.

I also never preorder games, mainly because of not wanting to pay full price, but also because in this day and age there is no need too.  Back in the N64 days for example I would preorder certain games like Ocarina of Time because there was no guarantee the stores in my area would have a copy the first week of release.  Nowadays between all the different stores + online retailers and digital downloads, there are a ton of ways to purchase games, so you never have to worry about securing a copy of a game if it's a big release or something you've been really anticipating.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Because I've burned several times before and I don't have the memory of a gold fish. That's my reason.

That is the exact reason I buy day 1. All my day 1 purchases are generally discounted by 33% or $20 CAD bucks.

I've never in my life bought a game day one. South America was rough. Nowadays, I simply dont care that much. In fact, by being patient, I manged to get my most played game this generation for free (Pokemon X).

The only game that I wanted to buy early on (first few days/weeks) but in the end didnt for being salty and dissapointed was Splatoon. Once they announced the big update, around August, I pulled the trigger. Besides that, I generally get games as gifts, my parents decide to buy me one, or they're old games
