Forums - Politics Discussion - Women burn burqas, men cut beards as Syrian town celebrates IS ouster

I have been following the battle of Manbij and have celebrated every district's liberation from ISIS. I await Al-Bab's fall soon and wish the SDF & the Kurds luck.

What could ISIS do in retaliation that they haven't been doing all the time? A car bomb? A chopped off head?

So happy that Manbij got liberated! Al-Bab is next, and when Al-Bab gets liberated the YPG and SDF can work on connecting the 2 cantons, which will mean the end of ISIS in the north of Syria. Hopefully it will happen soon.

A lot of women do choose to have them on. You can blame it on brainwashing all you want but the choice is ultimately theirs in many (if not most) cases. Nothing about it is bullcrap.

no its not. It is brainwashing. Who in the right mind would put that thing on because they choose it, the only thing i can  buy is for the heat, but that doesnt explain the burqas in sweden. Also if a women who wears a burqa just decided to want to remove it one day and dress just a bit more revealing, i bet she wouldnt be allowed to do that. I can bet you all my money on it

Burqas in Sweden? lol what?
I live in gothenburg which is the second larget city and I do see muslim women in the city a lot I've never seen a burqa.
It has to be pretty rare.

So wanting to cover your body means you're brainwashed.

Great logic.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

What do you have against nudists?

Something called public decency.

No one wants to see anyone's entire body. They can save that for home  or a strip club

The human body is a completely natural thing.

Good for them. Nobody should be forced to look/dress in a way they don't want to.
And I find burqa's to be oppressive and backward, and should never be warned.

Yeah I am also following the news daily and on computer hourly.

Using this site btw: http://isis.liveuamap.com

It is ofcourse good news they got the city but it is not really an important big city their were estimated 20.000 residents with 500 isis troops and the city was surrounded for alteast two months before they captured it. Hundreds of those 500 isis troops escaped recently with using human shields.

When ISIS is still in control of 1-2 million people 20.000 doesn't sound a lot especially from now on it only gets harder. It is kind of troublesome that it all takes so long.

Well IS is estimated to have lost over 1000 in the battle.  As for importance, it's not the numbers it's the location.  Manbij being contested prevented the Kurds and Syrians from putting full pressure on IS's territory connecting it to Turkey, which has allowed IS to keep its smuggling route open to that region.  With Manbij fallen, the closing of that route is imminent it would seem.  Which will further reduce their financial ability to make war.  Also, the more territory lost, the more the fear of ISIL continues to lessen.  Also, if the route to Turkey is closed, the ability to smuggle IS combatants into Europe will be greatly hampered.  So Manbij is an important victory.

Of course, don't expect this positivity in the media to last.  The moment a single airstrike goes awry or a new attack - no matter how rudimentary - happens, the fear mongering will return in full force along with sensationalized hate-mongering of whatever country launches said airstrikes.  Nevermind the consistent victories and momentum of the past several months and the thousands of flawless airstrikes that have been crucial to these victories.

*Edit* I'm being dumb and confusing burqa and hijab.
I live in Sweden too. Hijabs are being used by pretty much every foreign-looking woman in my town (Åstorp) and around here, in Skåne (south Sweden) you'll find that same pattern everywhere. Burqas are indeed rare. I have seen them here in Åstorp, I've seen them in Helsingborg, and I've seen them in Malmö. It is ABSOLUTELY a thing in Sweden. Still, it is kinda rare.

Never seen one in Gothenburg sounds like a lie.

Good for them. They aren't going to denounce centuries old worth of customs overnight but it's a start.

Actually, the modern tradition has only been customary since the late 1970s. In the 1950s and 60s, it was very rare in the Muslim world (with the exception of Saudi Arabia). It was banned in many countries until the Arab Spring when bans were lifted. The Palestinian Queen and the women of the Jordanian Hashemite dynasty do not wear any kind of head dress or face masks either.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
