vita first. ps3 second. 360 third. WiiU fourth. 3DS last
They all went irrelevant and EOL at some point

Then when NX will release we can stop talk about 3DS sales, this doesn't change that now 3DS is relevant, and i would say that for the next two months too 3DS will probabily be still more relevant than PS4.

Is it not a little unfair comparing ps4 and xbox in the month the ps4 gets new hardware?  Should we not compare them in November,  December,  January instead to really compare?

Aqua posts what she's allowed to. It's not up to the community. 

 

It's fairly good of NPD to even allow some data points to be posted publicly. Granted they are fairly immaterial to NPD's overall business. 

 

Besides, I never really get the obsession around numbers anymore, other than to fuel fanboy nonsense. Why can't people look at overall market trends instead. 

 

Sorry if I sound negative, it just bothers me that Aqua will post all this great macro data about various trends in the industry but no one cares unless she posts a number that shows their 'favourite company' is doing better than another company.

In my opinion, WIU, 3DS, PSV, 360, PS3, and Wii are all completely dead.

But I don't look at consoles, I look at markets. You have the Home Console market, the Handheld market, the PC Retail market, the Accessories market, and the Toys / Plug-and-play Market.

Generally, in the USA, the retail Handheld market has been very slow. 3rd-party games are increasingly rare on handhelds, Sony has completely abandoned the Vita (just shy of discontinuing it), and Nintendo will abandon the 3DS the instant NX releases.

I don't really care about dying markets or super-tiny publishers. That's why I don't tend to comment on super niche games from some random Japanese outlet that launch to like 25K.

My personal interests lie with the big drivers of the retail market....which in 2016 have been the console industry. That's why I've been showing a vertical slice of the console industry. It's taking a holistic approach to data sharing as opposed to just satiating console warz.

July 2016 is an interesting month because Pokemon Go completely invigorated Handheld sales and for the first time in a long time the 3DS is relevant, so I'm checking to see if I can comment on that or not.

sure. the pokemon go impact on 3ds hardware and (pokemon) software sales will be interesting for the rest of the year
when there is something to share, it should be done.

i just mean that in the grand scheme of things and mid term, they are all kind of irrelevant.

oh yes. that is totally right.
holiday and post holiday will show us how the market reacts to xb1s and presumable ps4 + ps4 neo
october is just the start and maybe an early indication.
november + december and january + febuary will be more telling and a better indicator.

Do you honestly believe that someone has to be a fanboy in order to be interested in 3DS numbers? People would actually like to look at overall market trends, but look at the situation we are in. We aren't even guaranteed to get hardware numbers for the #1 system this month.

Take a look at half the posts in this thread and on NeoGaf already. 

And of course I'm generalising. Not tarring all with the same brush here. Nor am I talking about people asking for 3DS numbers. Just how people act when they get numbers in general.
