@bolded: Could you please elaborate?

It's social media bullshit of people trying to boost their social status by using empty hashtags on the backs of other people's tragedies.

All of them?

So are these arsons ? if not I wonder how many are happening in Spain...
I know that in Italy there's a huge problem with arsons, it was reported that Rangers in southern Italy to not lose their job make arsons so that the State can't fire (no pun intended) them because there are animals to get safe and structures to re-build, I wonder if this happens in Portugal aswell...

All of them. People who actually care are currently busy donating or helping in any other way than posting empty hashtags.

I see.

Maybe it doesn't give these events visibility? Making more people aware of this unfortunate situation, which then allow more people to feel empathy for those experiencing all this, ultimately making them willing to help...

Nah. It's only narcissism in place.

I think your comment and the way you are expressing it speaks more about your person than anything else. Cynicism seems to be how you roll.

this world is on FIYAAAAA
some men just want to watch the world burn...

alright, im done. all jokes aside, wow, i hope things get better. that is terrifying

Making lame and unfunny mixtape jokes that've been repeated by annoying kids on the internet for the past 10 years?

You should be ashamed. Not just ashamed, but disgusted by the fact that you think it was even worth mentioning in the first place.

Wow, those are huge! But I'm surprised no major news outlet is reporting it...

That's the same thing I thought. I'm legit surprised that BBC doesn't have some coverage of that. Not even the Spanish networks.

They are starting to report on it now. But it's not really a top story so I guess the issue is not that serious, or maybe not many people are in danger?

Oh my fucking God, how the hell did this happened? Hope our portuguese brothers are safe, this is a huge natural catastrophe, what a way to destroy a beautiful country like that, this sure was provoked, hope they find the people who did this and put them in jail until they are old.

Isn't this a wildfire? If it was provoked by a person, I'd say jail isn't enough. Wouldn't be surprised if the people responsible were killed. Not like I'd care anyway. Humans and animals are in danger, but the assholes who could've done this destroyed a huge amount of nature that takes long to restore.

I wanted to check the twitter but I didn't last many post since I had to throw up about all those #prayforportugal hashtags.

It's how the world works. People just use a hashtag or prayer and think they're magically Jesus for a day and will die as a hero. It's worse when it happens to your own people. I remember people finally talked about gaza during the 50 day war in 2014. Hashtags everywhere about Gaza, but once the trend dies, everyone leaves. Jump onto the next event, pray, jump again, pray, jump, pray, on and on until the day they're dead. It's disgusting how people just do hashtags. They can help in many ways. Just teaching about it is enough to be considered helping. Donating old clothes or food. Giving money. Helping out someone else who needs support. A goddamn hashtag is nothing more an octothorpe followed by some letters, numbers, and/or symbols. I've quit all social media- the hashtags were one huge reason for me doing so.

How is it cynicism if so many people are nothing more than zombies who only care about what's in the news? People like to act as though they're helping, when it reality it does nothing.

Sure, not everyone has negative desires, but it's useless nonetheless. How many people will actually talk about Portugal within a week? People move on. Portugal will be forgotten by most people by the time the next ISIS attack occurs or when the next zoo animal dies(RIP Harambe). Perhaps we should be spreading the word on how to donate or help in any way. Hashtags are nothing more than an attempt to fish for likes.

How many people actually help when reading about these events? Of all the countless events I've seen, most people just change their profile picture, add a "Je suis Mike" or whatever the hell the event is, and just talk about the event until it dies down.

Last time I recall, changing my profile picture to the flag of Portugal will do absolutely nothing.

This is pretty much how greece looks every summer too, sometimes worse sometimes not quite as bad.
They are mostly out of control arsons there, since greece has special tree protection laws, that prevent people from clearing trees to build. Most of them jump to arson and the loss of woods and wildlife is much more devastating that way.
It's wierd knowing the fires are so and so many km from where you're staying, seeing the fire fighting helis fly overhead non stop and just going about your normal day.

Also, I can understand the derision for the #prayfor_____ wave that is going on. Once I saw someone putting #prayforportugal #prayfortheworld put toghether I had a pretty fed up response too. No. Do not pray.
If you're honestly that concerned about the planet and the various tragedies of humanity going on currently, get off of your ass and do something about it.
Change your lifestyle to one that is less resource hungry, go out and volunteer, stop being a prejudiced ass, educate yourself and help to bring education to others, there lots of things that you can actively do to make the world a better place. Sitting down and praying to some higher power (imaginary or not) to fix things for you isn't one of them.

Note that I'm not trying to bash anyone who is genuinely deeply religious and truly believes in the power of prayer. It's this knee-jerk reaction of asking people to pray instead of asking people to actually help, that is a point of contention with me.

What good does it bring to "bring more visibility" to a big event anyway? If you didn't know this was happening you obviously also don't care what happens in the world anyway. Posting "prayforX" does nothing. It has literally no benefit other than pleasing narcissistic urges.

Every day there are bad things happening to people and the vast majority doesn't even get nationwide recognition, let alone world wide recognition. Highlighting a single event is actually ridiculous if you think about it. It's basically an insult to everyone who had a tragic event without thousands of people posting "empathy".

Call me a cynic as long as you don't pretend that people who post empty phrases on social media are any more good or meaningful than me. Because their impact in the world is exactly as big as mine with the difference that I don't fake empathy.
