Forums - Gaming Discussion - Your Take On Cinematic Games?

Tagged games:

I hold story in very high regards in my games.

Here's the order for me: Gameplay > Story > Sound and Music > Graphics

The gaming community is getting pretty annoying as of late shunning games that put extra emphasis on the story.

Yes I know gameplay is a huge factor but imo story and gameplay have equal amounts of importance.

What's your opinion on how the community treats story-driven games?

I like gameplay cause if I wanted to watch a movie... I would watch a movie.

Story is one of the most important aspects of a game for me but if it sacrifices gameplay, then no thanks. There are plenty of games that do both really well where my money can rather go into. I can play a game without much of a story just fine provided the gameplay is really good but playing a game with bad gameplay is just essh worthy for me.

Specially if its like Telltales Batman series where the framerate ruins the immersion of the story and directly effects the gameplay... Idk why some people think framerate is exclusive to graphics when framerate directly affects gameplay and immersion. Poor framerate = poor gameplay experience... And I don't mean 30fps vs 60fps, I mean sub 25fps

You dont need a cinematic game to have a strong story.Cinematic games is not necessarily equal to having a good story.

But yeah, I also hold story in high regard.Depending on the type of game and what it is trying to achieve, story can be more important than gameplay.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I fully agree with this.

And yes its silly that people can view it as a negative, saying "cinematic experiance" like its a bad thing, usually tied with low fps ect.

Most people enjoy a good story, and its just as valid a reason to play games as any other.

When I was a kid I used to love them, I used to play Flashback and Out of this World again and again on SNES because it had cutscenes. Nowdays I hate it and skip it always.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Fully agree and I couldn't give a flying fuck what others think. I had a blast playing The Order 1886. What will people do, sue me?

I don't think people really hate story driven games, they just don't enjoy when the story and presentation is placed higher on the totem pole of importance than good gameplay. And that, I can agree with. There are some developers nowadays who prefer flashy presentation, cool cut scenes, and big set pieces to making strides in gameplay. There are games where lots of emphasis is put on graphics and narrative, with cookie cutter gameplay thrown in almost as an after thought. I don't want games like that. I want to be engrossed completely, not just by one aspect.

Story is great to have but gameplay should always come first. I'm holding a controller, my fingers are itching to move. Please give my hands something to do with the device they are currently holding.

How dare you enjoy games not focused on pure gameplay and innovative quirky colorful cheerful fun family fun style you heathen!!!!

It's kinda give and take. First off video games simply don't have the best writers. If you're a great writer you're not going to pick video games as your profession, you most likely would aim for movies or barring that, TV if you don't want to write books.

So I mean I kinda get it, for me it's very hard to play a 30+ hour single player game of any kind any more unless I feel the story is half way decent. I need to have something to chew on besides just gameplay/exploration for that length of time.

But on the other hand, most video game stories do objectively kinda ... suck. If they were movies you would probably be a lot more critical of them.
