They know English. If you don't even know English when traveling to foreign contries you are an idiot and basically beg for bad things and misunderstandings to happen to you.
You don't even have to speak it. Just a few phrases you can point at on a piece of paper. If you go unprepared into a foreign country you deserve everything that happens to you.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Their are people that live here in Australia that dont speak any English so...
You dont have too learn a second language if you want to travel.
