Forums - Sales Discussion - 3DS sales up over 200 per cent in UK YoY

I know this is last week, and on evidence of the new charts the 3DS surge continues, but it's quite insane how much Pokemon Go has had influence on the Nintendo handheld. Here's the article:

In what is becoming a now weekly MCV story, UK sales of 3DS consoles and 3DS Pokémon games continue to rise as the Pokémon Go obsession continues.

According to retail sources quoting GfK figures, Nintendo was the No.1 boxed games publisher (both in units and value) last week.

The firm held ten of the UK Top 50 games. Pokémon titles in that chart sold almost 9,000 units, with Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (No.11), Omega Ruby (No.18), Pokémon X (No.25) and Y (No.29) the highest charting titles.

3DS XL hardware was up 222 per cent last week compared with the same period a year before, while 2DS sales rose 234 per cent. The figures are all the more impressive when you consider that news of the 3DS’ successor - the NX - was leaked last week.

The official Apple charts (see below) reveals that Pokémon Go was comfortably the best-selling free apps on iPhone and iPad during its first two weeks, while App Annie says that the game was the highest grossing title on iPhone during launch (although at No.5 on iPad).

Sales of trading cards, Pokémon toys and clothing are also rising, while pre-orders for the upcoming 3DS titles - Sun and Moon - have also increased significantly.

Pokemon Go surely has become a system seller ina way. They have to find some way to put it on the NX.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

How many 3DS did they likely sell this week compared to x1 this week or last week?

Because double a very small number still isn't impressive especially if it's a temporary bump

Eh, 200+ per cent increase on the sales of a five years old console that is supposedly on its way out, and without a price cut, sounds impressive to me no matter how you look at it.

According to VGC, the 3DS sold a little over 5k both week ending Aug 1st and week ending Aug 8th last year (I'm not sure which one MCV refers to, so checked both).

If I remember my math correctly, 200% of 5k should be around 20k? But that's too high... I'm gonna say either I'm wrong, or VGC is wrong.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

No offense, but while it may not be impressive in absolute numbers is kind of ironic to hear that from someone that celebrates every week how Ps4 is selling 20k on Japan on its 2nd and a half year as it that was some kind of achievement, but a dying console on a dying market increasing a 200% yoy on UK after 5 and a half years? Nah, that's irrelevant xD

Anyway, I think this article is not very clear so I don't know if this is actually true, sure is up but not sure if by that much.

A 200% increase of 5k is 15k. But there's the obvious catch that VGC numbers are merely estimates and that the article only specifically mentions the 3DS XL and 2DS. Also, "3DS XL hardware" could refer to 3DS XL and New 3DS XL combined. Too many unknowns here to say anything for certain.

I would assume the article is only excluding the normal sized 3DS model (with New and Original models included), but yeah, it's too vague. We just know 3DS hardware increased by a lot, alongside Pokemon Software. Which means Pokemon GO is doing its job.

7 3DS games on the chart this week btw. Yeah 4 are Pokemon but NSMB 2 and Tomodachi appearing is good news for the system imo

Good news

Nice for 3DS
