Forums - General Discussion - Will the olympics be a disaster?

Are the olympics going to become a disaster?

Yes! 79 49.07%

No! 75 46.58%

It won't be, because it'll be canceled! 7 4.35%

Total:161

My biggest issue is besides a few product placements here and there -Ive barely seen ANY big ads for the Olympics o.o I remember 2008 and 2012 Olympics getting a ton of attention. Hell even the last Winter Olympics was well advertised. But this one is very quiet

It's already a disaster. Bad reports and zero marketing.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

People worried about zika in brazilian winter, seriously? Sure it has caused trouble but the mosquito is in egg state by now.

I don't care how much money they spend, public money is useless anyway, except for the social/globalist leaders.

This is alarmism in pure form.

So the Olympics shouldn't be awarded to any country at all is what you are saying ? It is so nice seing ppl talking about zika in Rio when the thing has already reached everywhere in the globe, so a wherever Olympics would have had a zika problem, and also how every European country and how USA sudenly make it seen like they have absolutly no social problems, poverty, rampart killings, insane hatred towards everyone spread across their society, robery and a fucktom of other crap when they talk about Brazil.

Europe and US are perfect. There is no violence, no terrorism, no poverty, no social problems, no zika, they have fantastic well preserved forests, clean water and the air ir pure. Thankfully there are lots of people who notice that and can tell us so we leave this terrible place called Brazil.

But seriously, there are problems everywhere, including Brazil. I do agree we suffer with violence more than Europe (although US is not really any better) and the political problems affected the Olympics, but it is far from a disaster. The water may not be perfect, but it is on par with London and Beijing, if not better, Brazilians are very receptive, the competition places are good, Rio is a beautiful place and there is a huge effort to avoid terrorism and zika problems. I don't understand why can't people just enjoy the Olympics. Many bad things were said about the World Cup here too, but it ended up being very good (except for the fact that Brazil lost).

Well perhaps we should just get rid of the Olympics?

billions wasted on games that stay relevant for a few months at most

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Well, it is an alternative, maybe we should only have Olympics after every person in the world have a good life quality, which will most likely never happen. I really love sports, I'm even going to Rio in two days, but there are more importante things we could invest instead of the Olympics.

Delusional brazilians are everywhere.... but... I really didn´t expect to find any here at VgChartz. Oh well.

People are proud of their country, you will get people defending Burma if you are lucky to see them on the internet.

Also Olympics could be fine itself (but behind the curtains a lot of problems will exist), if China can do it, a lot of countries could pull it off.

Honestly I wouldn't want to push Summer Olympics on my most hated cities, it brings nothing but ruin and wasted money. The thing is, you might get lucky and barely make a profit, but majority of the time it just brings financial burdens and one case financial ruin (Greece).

That´s ok about being proud about your nationality, no matter what. The problem is that many Brazilians (specially on the internet) are delusional about their own country. Yes, it´s a huge country with beautiful landscapes, peculiar culinary and rich/diverse culture, but it´s still plagued by deep (sometimes vey deep) social and economic problems that prevent it to fully achieve its potential. Many brazilians live by denying these problems, believing that those features I quoted are enough to compensate. They aren´t. And the country will never overcome its problems/limitations while people keep ignoring them. Keeping that poor talk about other nation´s problems doesn´t help either. Every nation has problems, but other nation´s problems are not excuses to keep ignoring your own.

It´s fine to get the World Cup and the Olympics, but some people here were (are) falling easily on politician´s speeches that this is  enough to put Brazil as a "developed, high-class" country. It´s not.

my thoughts exactly... what were they thinking when they gave Olympics to Rio? I mean even if we ignore political and economic problems, the extreme amount of garbage that pollutes sea water is a serious issue that cannot be fixed in the short termhttp://www.cbsnews.com/news/experts-warns-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-olympic-athletes-of-viruses-in-water-days-ahead-of-games/ I really hope that everything goes well, as the country and its people suffered economically for this, at least make it worth it...

C'mon, Thames River water was fine for the Olympics, it's not really any better than Guanabara. Millions of people get into the water there every year and nobody died because of that.

Garbage can harm the sailing boats. While people may not have died, and the water is safe is most popular beaches, there are reports of people getting sick after bathing in certain parts of the Bay.

Rio´s biologists and doctors themselves were the first to warn about the quality of the water, not foreigners. The city has also an institute that always monitor the quality of water. This is their last report: http://www.inea.rj.gov.br/cs/groups/public/documents/document/zwff/mda5/~edisp/inea_009193.pdf

Sadly that is how I know it as well, not all countries, I feel US, UK, and Canada complain more about whats wrong sometimes.

No, not a disaster... the organization is underwhelming, but the games themselves aren't at a real risk.
