Probably Mickey, as pretty much every kid for the last X amount of years, has grown up with him, one way or another.

I really don't think that's accurate for any kid born after 1977 or so in the developed world.

Mickey Mouse is largely irrelevant to today's kids, what's the last movie he was in? The characters of Frozen or Toy Story are probably more popular than Mickey Mouse with today's kids.

Not at all. Mickey is maybe not in the last Disney movie, but he is on the clothes, shoes, toys, books, school's furnitures, plushies of any kid (Mickey or Minnie). And in short Disney movies for young kids too. The favorite character of my niece is Minnie, and it's incredible how much stuff you can put her image on. And she doesn't even know what a video game or Nintendo is yet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Mouse_(TV_series)

"As of March 2014, a total of 100 million viewers in the United States had seen the series, and it was airing in 160 countries. As of June 2014, the show, translated in 34 languages, had reached over 135 million viewers worldwide."

And the 140m+ people who visit Disney Parks every year.

Mickey Mouse is still huge.

India has a population of 1.3B. Use that one as an example.

While not as popular as Mickey, Mario is actually well known there than most people would think.

I don't think he is. Frankly I don't see how he can be.

Yeah, I doubt a lot of people in Madagascar or India know Mario.

Why? My girlfriend is currently on holidays on a remote indonesian island, and the motorcycle safety helmet she got from her guide had a huge Mario face on it. Super funny photo :)

That's still Indonesia. I'm pretty sure if you go to one of the remote islandsof Australia there will be some people who know Mario. I'm talking about those countries where Nintendo has barely any footprint.

worldwide = mario, Nintendo still makes games with mario. When was the last time you saw a 2D cartoon from Disney?

Probably Mickey. While they're both very recognisable, I feel that Mickey has more of a legacy for a lot of people.

Damn man, of course it is Mario, he has Mario Land. There isn't even a place called MickeyLand.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Right now? Mario, definitely, I live in Mexico and my nephews play with their iPads, Wii U's, and watch Disney Channel and they've never seen a Mickey Mouse cartoon but have played several Mario games in their lives. Mickey seems that it doesn't exist outside Disneyland anymore. And they just love Mario in everything: games, cakes, amiibo, etc.

It's not even close.
