Forums - General Discussion - Who is most identifiable Mario or Mickey?

Who is most recognizable?

Mario 113 34.14%

Mickey Mouse 218 65.86%

Total:331

Come on people... think outside your little gamer bubble. How can people honestly believe Mario is close to Mickey.

No video game franchise or character is more identifiable than Mickey Mouse. Video Games aren't as well known or as common knowledge as people on here would like to believe.

Hard to tell. They are both up there as among the most recognizable among a variety of demographics. You could even argue Pikachu is also among the most recognizable characters ever.

Though it does interest me on how this will entail for Nitnendo's upcoming theme parks, movies, films, etc.

It's been said a lot that Mario is more recognizable than Mickey(Mouse).  Certainly in the gaming world, but I don't quite believe that's true throughout the whole of characters.  Mario certainly is famous, but does he really trump the first successful mascot?  I'm sure Mario isn't that big in parts of Asia where games are pirated like crazy.

I'd say it's pretty remarkable that you can say in a room full of people the names:

Mario

Mickey

and I'd be surprised if a large percentage of minds didn't immediately associate the names to characters even acrosss generations.

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

Both are completely tied (at least on places where videogames are not very rare)

Who here agrees that Batman and Superman are more recognizable than both of them?

Absolutely nobody xD

Yeah, I doubt a lot of people in Madagascar or India know Mario. You can bet they know Batman and Superman though.

Mickey Mouse is much more recognizable than Mario.
Everyone in every age knows Mickey Mouse (the same thing can't be said about Mario).

I've known about Mickey Mouse before Mario. He is also in Kingdom Hearts.

mickey by like 1000 fold.

for those saying he isn't in many cartoons lately you are forgetting his is basically the top franchise with young children. my 2 year old is obsessed with mickey and elmo. both are everywhere in kids clothing, books, toys, ect.

mickey = disney

if you know who disney is you know who mickey is.

don't get me wrong,.. mario is big and hugely reconizable. ...but tv/movie is much more mainstream than gaming and nintendo hasn't merchandised mario even a 10th as much as disney has merchandised mickey.

I'd say Mario. Only because I've honestly I rarely see Mickey these days in anything. My little nephews and nieces know Mario but don't know Mickey. So I dont think Disney's doing a good job marketing their main mascot anymore to the new generations.

It seems obvious for me that it's Mickey. Except maybe in a family of (Nintendo) gamers, but in a "normal" family the kids will watch Disney movies, want to go to Disney World/Land and get Mickey or Minnie plushies long before they even see Mario.

My brother in law is even a huge gamer but not a Nintendo one, my nephew and niece are huge fans of Mickey and Minnie (and Nemo, Simba, etc...) but never even heard of Mario. It could depend on the country too, I don't know, but I can't see Mario anywhere outside of the relatively small gaming world (compared to the Disney one). You're wrong if you think that Mickey or Minnie aren't in anything Disney is doing, they are everywhere in merchandising and contents made for kids : books, cartoons, plushies, school supplies, toys, even clothes...

And if we talk about the other side of the age chart, no doubt grandparents will know Mickey but not Mario (again, except the few who have been initiated to video games by their kids or grandkids). So overall, it's surely Mickey.

It looks like a question relevant only on a gaming forum, I bet a lot of other people would laugh at this debate ^^.
